DD - beginnings of asthma or just persistant cough?

I went to my GP with dd as she's had a horrible cough for about a month - causes her to vomit with all the congestion at least once a day. She's getting cold after cold - no exaggeration. I know it's the season for all this...but...

Anyway, my GP asked if there was any asthma in family (no - but my ds has mild eczema). He listened to chest and sent me away saying it's viral and she'll get over it.

Cough still bad week later (sleepless nights rule in this house) - anyone any experience or advice?

Anyone elses dc's going through all these colds like you wouldn't believe?

There do seem to be a couple of bugs going around which have a long residual cough hanging around a long time afterwards... if she's vomitting from congestion (i.e. a mucussy cough) then it sounds more likely to be viral to me.

However, if it's a couple of weeks after though it wouldn't hurt to take her back and get the GP to listen again. How old is your dd? I know doctors can be reluctant to diagnose asthma too young because there's some similar conditions that can show the same symptoms (and often be treated in similar ways) without it actually being asthma...

Awww poor little mite - it's horrible when they don't really understand what's going on, isn't it?

I would take her back to the GP just to listen to her chest again. TBH, I wouldn't be worried about the asthma as such (especially as you say she sounds congested), but I would want to check that it hadn't turned into a chest infection.

Other things that can help is make sure the head end of the cot is propped up so they can breathe better at night, some drops of karvol on a hankie somewhere in the room and medised at night to help her sleep (read the bottle carefully of course, it's paracetamol based with an antihistamine to help dry them up a bit and make them drowsy).

Yes - poor little thing. Gave her mashed avocado and baby rice for tea...10 mins later she was sick again.

To top it all just had a major battle with 3 yo ds trying to get him to bed.

I feel like crying tbh.

If you're getting no sleep I'm not surprised It's amazing how quickly sleep deprivation really wipes you out. Look after yourself too if you can - extra vitamins and an early night

Thanks again - you're right - sleep deprivation completely sucks [sob]...it was my birthday yesterday and I suppose I've been trying to wear a smile all weekend (pretending I'm not as tired as I really am).

Awww... be like the queen and have a second birthday sometime when dd is better and Christmas is all over - treat yourself to a present and a night out and lots of booze
