Woke up with a deep purple bruise on my eyelid this morning ... should I worry?

My eye felt a bit itchy and sore this morning and I rubbed it then realised it was quite painful. When I looked in the mirror I noticed a dark purple bruise on my eyelid towards my nose about the size of a 5p coin. I've had a headache for a couple of days but I get a lot of headaches anyway. I spoke to NHS Direct who said it was unlikely to be connnected to the headaches but I'm a neurotic so I'm worrying.

Is this familiar to anyone?

SEA this isn't like eye bags, this is a dark bruise on my upper eyelid in a circle just like a 5p coin. Is that similar to you?

Yes! Like the eye on the right with less area covered rather than the heavily bruised other eye. But yes, just like that, same colour. What does that mean?

It just sounded familiar & when you mentioned you had other symptoms....
Quite rare condtion called amyloidosis, probably not that, but a doctor may not immediately think to check. You're seeing a specialist neurologist, they probably would.

I have had this twice it is a very dark colour with a definite edge not really like a random bruise.It is essentially a small bleed my doctors said it is v common in people who are on steroids which i am.It is nothing to be concerned about but show it to gp I know how scary it is as it just looks so bad but is harmless HTh

Noddy I'm not on steroids - would it still be common?

doyouwant, I'll look up amyloidosis now. Is it something you're familiar with?

Steroids make you more prone to bruising Are you on any medication or had you taken any?

The anti-biotics I'm on at the moment make the taker more prone to brusing - are you on any?

No, no medication apart from for asthma and Neurofen Plus for headaches.

what asthma tablets?I know if I take nurofen or aspirin it can make my blood thinner and cause bruising.The nurofen and asthma tablets together could have caused it.Mention it to your gp but don't worry!

No asthma tablets, just inhalers. One of those is a steroid inhaler but I've taken it since I was 10 years old and it doesn't enter the blood stream.

I think the steroid inhaler with nurofen probably caused it.I have had bruising with nurofen.

Maybe it's that then. Did you find it quite painful? My eyelid feels very hot, achy and kind of itchy.

Oh, I'm getting all worried now ...

anything you read on the internet is scary IF. Noddy & DDDD make good sense. It's just worth knowing if it's amyloidosis because there are treatments that can ease the symptoms.

I don't want to frighten you, it just sounded familiar & wanted to help you get to the bottom of it.

Talk to your GP about the bruising ASAP.

Honestly, IF, get it checked in the morning if you can. You're worrying yourself , understandably - I know what it's like to be fretting about something medical and having to wait to find out whether it's something dangerous or not. Is there a walk-in centre you could go to?

I hope you get a good night's sleep without headaches/worry, anyway. I'll be watching for an update!

Thanks everyone. I think I'll reassess in the light of day tomorrow. Hopefully it will have faded a bit by then which I guess would be a good sign? I'll see the GP on Monday.

a bite?

I woke up one morning unable to open one eye. I stumbled ot the mirror and it was swollen and bruised. I looked like I'd been punched. I was in Japan and some friends suggested it was a centipede bite during the night! Decided some sort of bite was the only possibility.

Well, we just don't tend to get insects in our flat - 21st floor of a tower block so they don't make it this high!

Today it's still there, slightly more reddish purple than blackish purple, still sore and achy and I keep imagining I can see some on the other eyelid too ...

I just did a search because I woke up with the same thing, and found your post. I thought it was eyemake up at first. Whatever did you come up with on this? Did it go away quickly or get worse? I’d post a pic if that were an option here. Strangest thing!
