IS THERE ANY WAY TO EASE DS1's EARACHE?

He just keeps crying in pain. He saw the Dr tonight and has a spray for it but he's in so much pain. I have just given him nurofen. He had Medised at 6pm.
I don't know how else to help him.

how old is he? Would he tolerate a hot water bottle on it? Can be very soothing

Warmth sometimes quite comforting (have you got a teddy hot water bottle or something ?) and my mum always gave me a silk scarf to hold against my ear - must be pyschosomatic but it seemed to work a bit.

Horrid isn't it ?

My dd had it last week - I was double dosing Calpol and Nurofen (one every 3hrs) and she still said it hurt until the abs kicked in.

How old is your ds ?

Had dreadful earache as a child and I can confirm heat on the affected ear helps a lot.
Hope he feels better soon, poor thing.

He is 7. Tried warm flannel but he just screamed out as soon as it touched his ear. Seems very painful hen touched even gently. He's asleep again now on the sofa.
When can he have Calpol/Medised again now?
I think its going to be another long night. Just got over me and DD1 having sick bug!

If he is more upright it will ease the pressure on his ear - if he wakes up again try getting him to sleep in a semi-sitting position (when ds1 had agonsing earache he 'slept' propped up on me). Try lifting him up on lots of pillows. Calpol is 4 hourly - not sure about Medised.

Think it is 10pm for medised, but he can have calfropen in between.
So you can give pain relief every two hours as long as one is paracetamol based and the other is calfropen.

myrrhthamoo · 08/12/2006 22:17

You can give Nurofen and Calpol at the same time - if he had Medised at 6, it should be OK to give him another dose now if he wakes again (Medised is paracetamol based, isn't it?)

myrrhthamoo Thanks. He's gone to sleep half sat up.
Its the nurofen and Calpol/Medised time gap that i'm not sure about.

Crossed posts!
Thanks for that. Will give him calpol when he wakes again. He's not really with it when he wakes up!

Bless him. Earache is the pits - hope he feels better soon.

Thank you. Hopefully the spray will work soon!
