sciatic pain

Am I being unreasonable to think that my father is talking through his hole in saying that alcohol consumption is the cause?

no you're not.

Sciatica is most often caused by problems with the discs in the L1-L5 section of the lumbar spine, or skeletal problems/misalignment in that area and the pelvis where the Sciatic nerve anchors to the lower spine and travels through the sacrum in the pelvis.
