..which has got a coating which is sore and at the sides has a raw look and difficulty swallowing and roof of mouth sore

I think it is either cypramol ads, mouth wash, toothpaste or magnesium ok

anyone any ideas I have missed the chance to see the docotor before next week.

Hmmm, I've had raw tongue a lot. This is normally (in me) oral thrush. The fix:

  • find out why my immune system has packed in (normally, coz I'm pregnant)
  • strongly reduce sugar intake
  • avoid vinegar/mustard/etc.

Combination with difficulty swallowing etc sounds like tonsils though, maybe?

Beat me to it NQC, i was going to say oral thrush, because the sypmtoms Glenn describes sound like what i get. i get it because i take Becotide inhalers, and twice this year have had antibiotics, which can cause it.
I often get difficulty swallowing,as the thrush is in my throat as well.
Glenn, poke your tongue out at a pharmicist, if it is a fungal infection, they will give you something until you can see your doc

There are meds for oral thrush? The only times I've had it badly, I was pg, so didn't consider them .... anyway it didn't hurt that bad, and it made for an easy way to gross people out ...

santasaltire · 08/12/2006 10:23

If i have it quite bad, i go and see my GP, he gives me something called Nystan tablets, which are chewy, aniseed flavoured disgusting things, but they clear it up. I had a mild dose of it a few weeks ago and got something from Boots, which i had to paint on, it was called Daktarin Oral Gel.

NotQuiteCockney · 08/12/2006 10:24

Ok, cool, worth knowing, in case I get it bad again. I really only get it if my immune system is packing up (I get skin thrush then, too. Yummy!), so I tend to dig for root causes at that point.

And even when I had it in pregnancy, it wasn't that bad. Ok, I went off tomatoes eventually, whih was a bit , but still, I obviously haven't had it as badly as some have ...

GlennCloseAsCruellaDeVille · 08/12/2006 10:37

how do you get it? is it using mithwash and destroying the natural bacteria environment? I was afraid I might be heading for anaphylaxis as i am allergice to dequadin lozenges which was a nasty expereince but that was about 25 years ago!

I get this, for some reason apples do it for me and sometimes tomatoes as well. Which is a bummer as I really love both .

santasaltire · 08/12/2006 10:40

Sometimes eating spicy foods can do it, or fizzy things, or even very hot things. If you aren't happy, then stop using the mouthwash.
How long have you been using the ADs? If it's been a while then i would have thought that a reaction to them would have shown before now!

GlennCloseAsCruellaDeVille · 08/12/2006 10:57

I've been on the ads 7 weeks but only three weeks at the higher dose and they are giving me all the symptoms of dry mouth, headache etc

over the same time i started using mouthwash and changed my toopaste and have also had diet coke a bit recently and an innocent smoothie

Ironically I never had this when i was drinking red wine nightly!

I get this in the middle of hayfever season if I've had several bad days, so could be an allergy. I'd be inclined to see what happens if you stop the mouthwash and go back to your original toothpaste, and then if that doesn't help investigate other possible causes.

GlennCloseAsCruellaDeVille · 08/12/2006 11:22

I am atopic

which is why I normally steer clear of things but I've made some lifestyle changes and now I've got this..ironically i got rid of my black tongue and had a lovely pink one and now it's gone to pot!

now made the mistake of googling and discovered it could be something called stomatitis and or thrush or low white blood cell count caused either by dentures (no) medication causing dry mouth (yes) lack of good bacteria (yes)

so are stomatitis and thrush the same thing?

in fact noen the wiser
