Blood tests show ALT 380+ what does this mean?

I've been feeling run down for a couple of months so decided to go to the doctors, she was reluctant (probably because I'm young (25) and fit and healthy) but I begged her to do some tests as it was really starting to get me down

Results have come back today and everything was normal other than my ALT enzyme was three hundred and eighty something (can't remember exact number!) the lady said it should be under 40.

She said the most likely cause is hepatitis but I can't see how I would have contracted this having never used needles other than from a nurse and having only had unprotected sex with long term partner.

Anyone had levels this high and it ended up being something else?

Did she mean hepatitis through drinking or like that you have contracted it? Are you overweight or anything? Mine have been elavated before & it's from fatty liver.

Laurenrl · 11/11/2015 22:23

I'm 10.5 stone and 5'5" so if say a little overweight but not majorly.

I drink once or twice a week 2-3 units so doubt it's that

I've had a scan and was told my lover is inflamed but still awaiting further tests to find out why.

So I think she probably meant contracted it but I doubt it is going to be that. I guess I'll be waiting a week or so to find out!

Hope you've been well since your diagnosis

You can get Hep A from being abroad, not sure if it's dodgy food, water.....

I had to have a vaccine when I went to Thailand. You can also get it from sewage I think.

My friend got hepatitis from a takeaway, he was run down for a couple of months too but good now

Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver.

It can be caused by many things including the Hepatits viruses (one of the more common causes) but also by a whole range of other things. When you we told it was probably caused by Hepititis, they may (probably did) mean inflammation of the liver, not the virus.

(Speaking as someone who has had inflammation of the liver (Hapatitis) which was not caused by the Hepatitis virus.)
