Constipated and distressed!

I've name changed because I don't want my usual name to be associated with my bowel issues.

I have Gastroparesis. In layman's terms; delayed gastric emptying. Food doesn't move into the small intestine, it remains sitting in my stomach and I vomit regularly as a result. A common add-on is that I am very constipated.

Gastroenterologist is a specialist in his field and has trialed every laxative with me. The ones that you dissolve into water e.g. movicol are a no go. Without fail, I vomit them up rapidly. I'm not sure if I now have a psychological aversion but I cannot keep them down. I did have some success with senna liquid (I don't digest tablets very well) but it's reached it's peak.

I have an enormous stomach, pain around my belly button, burping and vomiting more than my usual. I know I need poo.

Usual remedies are no good because I'm on a low fibre diet. No point trying bananas or dried fruit because it just won't digest. My stomach is very unhappy and would reject it anyway right now. I'm living off supplement drinks, mashed potato and white bread.

I'm posting because I'm desperate and uncomfortable.

You poor thing. Sounds awful. Have you tried glycerin suppositories? They have always worked well for me.

TheoriginalLEM · 03/10/2015 13:06

oh gosh that sounds fucking terrible :(

i don't have any really sensible suggestions as medics will have tried most medical solutions.

does bulking it out with fibrogel help?

strong coffee and book shops work for me and lots of people actually.

how long has it been? can you go to ooh or evenA&e ask for an enema?

I have tried lactulose in the past, which works but made me gassy Blush

Where I live syrup of figs is popular but didn't work for me.

I do find Movical the best thing. Have you tried taking the Movical in a different way? I take it in a large glass of squash - I have to have it really dilute or I can't get it down. Or mixed into yoghurt or a smoothie, if you can have that? I can understand why you might not want to try though, If it's made you vomit in the past.

If all fails from the top end, glycerin suppositories are a godsend! But best saved for emergencies as it's not good to get used to them.

(I have constipation due to medication)

Are you active? Walking and exercise really help. Do you manage to get enough fluids?

Also have you tried suppositories/enemas?

Awful thing to live with. Have you looked into deep massage to encourage bowel to move ? There are abdominal massage techniques that will help in the short term, and that you may be able to learn do for yourself or with the help of a partner so as not to end up bankrupt every time you need a poo. Have you seen a physio ?

bigbloated1 · 05/10/2015 14:28

Sorry I didn't return. I felt rough rough rough and then couldn't log back into my account. Blush

Thank you for your suggestions.

I was prescribed biscodal (sp?) suppositories by OOH GP. I wouldn't normally waste their time over a chronic issue but the pain and swollen stomach was worrying me and I needed to check it wasn't anything else. I've had some minor movement but I'm not really shifting the bulk of what is blocking me up.

I am not very active due to being ill with other issues but I'm going to muster up some energy for a walk today. I will google abdominal massage once I've sent this and I haven't seen a physio, didn't even cross my mind to be honest, but I am desperate, so I shall look into it.

I'm trying to drink more. I probably don't drink enough but my GI system is so full of crap that I am puking more than my usual.

I hope you'll come back to say how you get on. I haven't got gastroparesis myself but am aware of it for other reasons. I found at least one blog by a sufferer - well, could be you of course, but if not, it might be helpful in some way.
Hope you manage a walk today.
