DD breathing going a bit funny again as she has a cold. Really frustrated as she has been 'ok' for a month now so thought worst was behind us. Have increased the inhalers routine but am just fed up with them refusing a preventer for her as I really think it would help.

why wont they gvie an preventer?

foxinsocks · 30/11/2006 09:41

eh? so you've only got ventolin?

Nemoinapeartree · 30/11/2006 09:44

misdee they keep fobbing me off with her being too young which ok when she was 3mths old was fair enough but now she is 11mths and last month when we had to go in for steroids they still wouldnt give her anything. She can have the ventolin but nothing else..our Gp is rubbish as because she has been in hospital so many times before he wont 'intefer'.

dd1 was asthmatic as a baby, she had a preventor at around a year old.

how often are you doing the blue inhalers?

foxinsocks · 30/11/2006 09:46

what did the hospital say last time you were in?

(I can't remember what age mine started the inhaled steroids but I'm pretty sure they were very little because I remember getting an 'infant' size mask for the inhaler)

Nemoinapeartree · 30/11/2006 09:46

at the min am doing the 5 puffs[5breathes each puff]every 4hrs as that is what they do when she goes in.

is she getting wheezy with those 4 hours?

foxinsocks · 30/11/2006 09:48

she needs the preventer nemo

have you called Asthma Uk - they are very good - you need to see another doctor or go to the hospital and tell them that he won't prescribe it for you

Nemoinapeartree · 30/11/2006 09:49

foxinsocks they gave us the prednisolone steroids last time for a week long course. She has a spacer with face mask on and has done from 3mths old but its just getting the preventer from them they just wont give it. Obviously being asthmatic I know the ventolin opens her airways but it is the preventor[steroid based] that actually has more of a long term effect..so bloody fed up with it all.

misdee she is wheezy, not as bad but is not right iykwim. I have tried taking her to other drs via walk in centres etc but all just refer us back to the hospital.

I would go back to the hospital - surely they will prescribe you the inhaled steroids?

I can't see the sense in giving her steroids taking by mouth for short courses rather than inhaled steroids which will hopefully stabilise her condition for the longer term

misdee · 30/11/2006 09:52

is the 5 puffs giving her any sort of relief?

with dd1 we do 2 puffs, waitm if no relief another two puffs. once this has gone to 8 puffs with no relief, its straight to gp/a+e for further treatment, and do one puff a minute till we get there. usually a nebuliser.

Nemoinapeartree · 30/11/2006 09:54

it relieves her for about 30mins then she starts hagain with the cough then within an hour she is wheezing again and can see her sides working hard. At the min she is happy as have used the inhaler about 15mins ago so of course being a toddler is throwing herself around like an idiot..lol
