Ulcers & sores from fitted brace

DD has fitted braces fitted this week and now has sores or small ulcers on all sides of her mouth. Can anyone advise what would be good long term to treat these. She has to have alcohol free mouthwash, but I can't find one that treats ulcers. Also, have looked at bongela, but all I've found is one suitable for toddlers and the adult one says 16+, I guess one will be too weak and the other two strong.

Is the brace rubbing? You can get wax from the orthodontist (same wax as on a Babybel cheese) to put on the wire if it is.

Might be worth asking at the chemist re the Bonjela.

Poor soul. DS2 had his bottom brace fitted yesterday and was in agony this morning. You feel so helpless don't you?

Thanks. I forgot to say I'd already bought some wax and the orthodontist gave me some. I knew her teeth would ache and she'd get some sores (as I had a fixed brace myself) but didn't expect it to be so bad.

Hope you DS's mouth feels better soon.

Thanks ifonly.

Maybe call the orthodontist and see if they can suggest anything further. IIRC after a week things really settle. it's just these first few days to get over.

Is she being brave or fed up like DS2? He is being a bit of a wuss about painkillers. Sad

She's trying to be brave but doesn't really want to eat. She's been invited to a BBQ this afternoon, so will have to cope with that one.

DS2 is much the same. He hasn't eaten much since and he's got a day at his mate's birthday today involving pizza etc. Sad

He seemed to be better when he had the top brace fitted, but this bottom one is causing more problems it seems.

When I had my braces fitted for the first week or so they ripped my mouth to shreds - well it felt like it anyway, it was extremely painful. I covered the braces with the wax until it healed which took seemingly forever and the whole thing was a total pain, but it never happened again and I hardly knew they were there after that.

Orthodontist saw her today as an emergency. She's trimmed wires at back as much as she can and assured DD that things will settle down. Has also given her two more packs of wax. In all fairness she said if she has any more problems to phone her reception and she will assess whether to see DD, rather than not knowing what to do and worrying about it at home.

Snowfilledsky, how's your son's mouth now?

That sounds better ifonly is your DD a bit happier?

DS has turned a corner I think. He started eating a bit today but he's still really conscious of it.

DD went through tons of wax and bonjela with her braces. However when she was more used to them the amount of wax needed reduced to near nothing. But Bonjela was needed occasionally right up to the end. I think she just liked the taste of it!
