*******VERY URGENT, DH fell with 16 week old ds**********

My DH has just tripped and fallen onto his elbow with 16 week old ds in that arm, he seems ok, but i am now bothered about what to do? what signs i need to look out for? Should i go to A&E?

Ds didnt actually hit the floor, but obviously his head would have had some impact from my DH elbow hitting the laminate flooring.

Please help, feel sick with worry

if ds has hit floor you would be looking for obivous signs of a bump. distress, abnormally sleepy and sometimes they will vomit if a head injury. please dont worry but call NHS 24 if conceren

dh fell down stairs with ds at the same age and its amazing the parental reaction to safe child. poor dh couldnt walk for a week and had probably fractured ribs

ring NHS direct for some reassurance but Im sure everything will be fine with baby. My MIL fell down the stairs with my ds on her hip when he was about 6 months old. He didnt hit anything but bruised between his legs a bit. Also when he was about 18 months old I fell up the stone garden steps and luckily was shielding his head with my arm - I took him to A&E and they just checked him over. My knees were in tatters for weeks though

I feel sure your baby is ok. Your husband on the other hand will have a very sore elbow!
Babies are quite bouncy. And as you say, he didn't even hit the floor. Your husband did very well there.

How does your ds seem? Did he cry? Has he calmed down?
Sure that you've nothing to worry about. I did this with dd - fell up stairs while carrying her, and she was shocked more than anything to be honest - really cried for a little, like when she has the startle reflex test at her first check up. Then calmed down and no other signs of anything wrong.
do try NHS direct though - it's what they're there for.

Agree call NHS Direct - they are very good and will advise.

Please don't worry too much (easier said than done) DD fell out of her car seat and landed on her head onto a pavement at 12 weeks and she was fine! Although I was in a terrible state and rushed her off to A&E!

Just started thinking about if his head got shaken badly as DH hit the floor (shaken baby syndrome symptoms), and then started thinking if i go A&E they might think we have purposely done something to him.

If he didn't actually hit his head I wouldnt worry.Signs to look pout for with head injury= vomiting soon after,any decreased conciousness ie difficult to rouse.Does he seem ok?Babies are often more resilient than we think.Ds accidentally headbutted dd when she was this age(he was bouncing on the bed and bounced into me while I was bfing!!!)She cried a lot but was otherwise OK.Hope your dh is ok too!!!If you are at all worried ring NHS DIRECT,or if baby did seem to deteriorate suddenly get to casualty.HTH

He screamed the place down, i was upstairs putting dd to bed and just heard the bang.

He seems a bit whingy now, but no more than usual. Scared to let him go asleep now. He was a little sick after it happened.

I thought that about the shaken baby syndrome too! But dd had no lasting effects, and with SBS there is usually a sustained and repetitive shaking rather than a single jolt. Do try NHS direct though if you're still worried.

His elbow is sore, still i could have killed him though, he is so clumsy its unbelievable.He was too busy stomping down the stairs to see the baby bouncer on the floor in front room and tripped over it.

I am sure they wouldn't think that, if you are worried then go, but if your ds seems OK to you then I would (personally) not go to A&E. However, whatever it takes to put your mind at rest. The one thing I would do is keep checking on him while he's asleep, and wake him if the sleep goes on longer than you are used to. Hope you are feeling OK

Might ring NHS direct just to be on safe side, if the waiting time isn't 10 hours like normal lol.

Your dh did a great job not letting him hit the floor, I remember falling down the stairs holding dd1, I ended up breaking my foot in an all out attempt not to fall forward and land on her, it's amazing the preservation for the child that kicks in. Please do ring nhs or go to a&e if you feel like you need to have him checked.

Please dont worry about A+E !!They come across such mishaps regularly.Believe me this will be the first in a long line of childhood misadventure.DS nearly 3 has managed to fall off a picnic bench onto concrete,trap numerous fingers etc etc.The worst is when they start walking.Poor mite seemed to have a permanent bruise on his head from falling over!!!

Pucca, don't want to unnecessarily alarm you but a woman at our toddler group fell with her baby in a sling, took all the impact of the fall on an arm but obviously fell on her baby. he did have a hairline fracture so would get to A&E just to get your ds checked over...

your obviously worried so take both Dh and DS to the A&E to get them both checked over.

please dont worry about SBS, between your Dh's poorly elbow and any injuries your ds may have the medical staff will be able to know the difference.

you should never be worried about getting into trouble to the point it stops you getting medical help.

(this is why those Eastenders storylines about babies getting hit really anger me)

if they tell you to go to A&E avoid the waiting by getting NHS direct to ring the hospital and tell them you are on the way. Saves us hours with DS2, who is one accident prone child if ever there was one....

oh Yes they fax ahead and let them know you are on the way! Although I have beaten the fax on a couple of occasions!

Ended up going to A&E with ds, as a lump appeared on his head, and one side looked a bluey colour.

They checked him over and said the only thing they could do is a CT scan which they don't like doing with LO's.So they just felt his head for any decompressions, which was ok, and said the lump & colour was because prob some blood had gathered under the skin.

Didn't have much faith though tbh as the doctor asked me " is he walking?" WTF!!!! 16 week old baby....erm.

Snort at the walking. Glad he is OK pucca. It is so horrible when this happens.
