Mirena fitted yesterday

Hi all, after months of hesitation I finally had the Mirena coil fitted under general anaesthetic yesterday - long story but I'm almost phobic about insertion. I only had it to shrink a small fibroid that has made me bleed every day for the past 12 months, no other contraceptive method except norethisterone tablets stopped the bleeding, but various HCPs told me I couldn't take those long term, even though I'd managed to get by taking only 1 per day instead of 3. I didn't want the Mirena at all, but surgery wasn't given as an option.

So now I have the Mirena. It took 20 minutes for them to get it in, which I'm told is unusual, and there's a LOT of blood. The worst bit though is that I'm so AWARE of it - I roll over in bed, or sit forward on the settee, and I can feel it inside me. I know I only had it put in yesterday, but is this normal? Does the ever present sensation eventually go away?

I was really aware of mine at first, it wasn't exactly painful, just felt like I could feel all the edges! it doesn't last, have had mine over a year now and get very occasional twinges but I think it's more in my head! I felt like crap the first couple days but it got better quickly. hope you feel better soon! x

I think you are probably feeling very sensitive due to the fact it took so long to get it in place and probably a lot of furking around. Mine felt a bit weird for a couple of days, but soon settled down. If you are able to take Ibuprofen I would think that would help to reduce the sensation a bit.

I have the mirena and I don't remember feeling it inside me, could they of left the strings to long and that's what you can feel?

MatildaTheCat · 15/08/2015 20:40

I've just had my fifth and final Mirena inserted. I am still a little crampy at times. I would say give it time and rest with a hotwater bottle and some painkillers to allow things to settle. If you can bear to, have a feel around and you should be able to feel the strings tucked up behind your cervix.

If you still feel like this next week then pop along to your family planning clinic or practice nurses and ask them to just check that it is all normal.

Do hope it settles things for you, mine have been amazing lifechangers

I could feel mine when I rolled over for the first couple of weeks. Now I just get the odd twinge. It took ages to settle but now it is great

I had my merina put in under general too and I could feel it for about a week. I had a weird feeling of fullness or something. Oddly, a run seemed to "settle" it for me. Hope you very soon can't feel it!

It does go away. I remember being so afraid to poo for the first couple of days as I was in a panic it would move, and I'd feel like a jabbing pain every time I moved suddenly. It's been in eighteen months now and still feel it sometimes but it's not so bad.

Thanks everyone, I feel a lot more reassured now! Smile I definitely got the feeling of 'fullness', but I feel a lot less bruised and uncomfortable.
