My baby niece stopped breathing today

Does anyone have any advice or ideas what could have caused this? My great-niece is nearly 8 weeks old and apparantly she stopped breathing today my niece (babies mum) picked her up and was on the way out the door to the hospital when the baby then made a gurgling noise threw up everywhere and then started breathing. My sister said that the other day she was looking after her when she heard a strange gurgling noise from her pram and went to check on her and she had stopped breathing, she picked up her she was then sick everywhere and started breathing again.

I feel that this is serious enough to take her to the hospital tonight. Does anyone have any ideas?

only to go and get urgent medical advice ASAP

take her to the hospital now IMO...this could indicate something serious...no idea what..but stopping breathing is about as serious as it gets.

amynnixmum · 24/11/2006 17:30

I don't have any idea what it could be but i agree with you that she should get it checked out asap. Much better to be safe than sorry and the doctors won't mind if it turns out to be something minor.

NotQuiteCockney · 24/11/2006 17:30

Yeah, I'd go to A+E. Tiny babies with breathing problems need to be seen asap.

Saturn74 · 24/11/2006 17:31

I would suggest that this child needs to be seen my a medical expert asap. Can she be taken to A & E immediately?

QuootieMincePieButIDontLikeEm · 24/11/2006 17:43

A & E now id say xxx

sunnysideup · 24/11/2006 17:49

I certainly couldn't put that child in a cot for the night without having had this checked at the hospital! She should go.

Given that this sort of apnoea is not unheard of in SIDs babies, I can only echo the others excellent advice

I've also experienced stop breathing episodes with my dd - but only from the age of 10 months. Each time we've rushed her to hospital. An eight week old baby who stops breathing should be taken to A & E urgently.

Thanks for all your advice. I have just spoken to my sister, my Mum had heard phoned earlier and she had slighty got the wrong end of the stick. Apparantly on each occasion she was choking on her vomit which was also coming through her nose and she was gasping for breath. I am still deeply concerned by this and I have urged my sister to get my niece to call NHS Direct to see if they recommend that she is seen tonight. I personally would like her to rush to hospital as there is no way I could put her in a cot tonight after this.

Thanks again I will let you know how she gets on.

Hi Nogoes,

I echo the other posts on here that your niece should go to hospital tonight to get this checked out, but having had my DS diagnosed with reflux last week, I have read lots on it and babies with reflux can also experience breathing difficulties, and occasionally get sleep apnoea (Sp?). Reflux is treatable (not curable) with medication and babies grow out of it. Recommendations are to prop cot up at 45 degree angle, ditto changing mat and often winding part-way through feeds helps.
So, just to reassure that from your post saying that she is choking on vomit, it could be this and therefore could not be as serious - I hope it is something not serious - thoughts are with you.
