Cold sore the size of a small cockroach

Greensleeves · 23/11/2006 20:22

OK, I'm fed up with it now. It has exited the "cluster of angry boiling blisters" phase and entered the "weepy peeling wet bran flake" stage. I have used a whole tube of Zovirax and as much earwax as I could scrape out of my ears, but the bastard is still burgeoning. Any folk remedies? The more ridiculous the better?

Ear wax? I have your cockroaches brother on my bottomlip. Its the in look for 2007 you know!

Greensleeves · 23/11/2006 20:26

ear wax is the treatment deluxe for cold sores apparently. But you have to catch them at the "tingle" stage, which always seems to pass me by. How big is your cockroach? Mine is about the size of a jelly baby, it is quite possibly the largest one I have ever seen

OK, this is going to sound silly but I used to get LOADS of cold sores and I haven't had one for years and years and I reckon it's because

I stay out of the sun
I eat lots of vit c
I WILL them away. I utterly don't get flustered any more, I say to myself "Oh, that's a tingling feeling. I don't tihnk it'll be a cold sore but if it is, so what? I won't let it get to me, it will pass' anyway, sounds crap and at one stage I honestly wondered WHY I wasn't getting them anymore and wondered whether I ought to worry about not getting them (I mean, durr!) until dh told me not to be so silly.

So, sorry, my crappy advice is forget about it, stop fretting, it'll go. Other than that, Zovirax but you;ve done that.

Greensleeves · 23/11/2006 20:27

Thanks WWW (hello, btw), will try that as soon as this one has gone.... but how am I going to get it to sod off in the meantime?

Ring your gp and he/she can prescribe you a course of aclovoir tblets you take 5 a day for a week and it will reduce the length of this cold sore and also prevent or at the least make any other cold sore you get in the next 12 months extremly mild. I've done this and it's brill it deadens the virus for a year!

WideWebWitch · 23/11/2006 20:30

You can't ime. So you might as well stop worrying about it. Sorry, nto what you want to hear, I know but I tihnk you're past miracle cures and into wait it out. I used to get loads, I do know how utterly depressing they can be. I used to work in an office with just me and another bloke, who was a friend and I had a post it stuck to the office door saying "TAKE YOUR CREAM OFF" as I would sit all day with a lip COVERED in Zovirax and forget to take it out when I went out in the street. I remember when it first came out that, it was a miracle cure but you had to get it on prescription, it was a pita, I used to BEG them just to leave a prescription out for me.

charliecat · 23/11/2006 20:31

Mine is a jelly babys head size NOW, but its been larger over the course of the last 5 days.

BudaBeast · 23/11/2006 20:31

Never found Zovirax much good TBH. I took Pregnacare pretty much solidly for about 2 years and I reckon that put paid to mine although I have had a few since they never get to that cockroach stage!

Something I have found good is a tiny little tube of lip balm stuff with propolis in it. You can get it in any good chemist that has a vitaminy/health section. Can't remember the brand unfortunately but I just asked for something with propolis in it and was pointed in right direction.

You sound a bit run-down at the mo Greeny so something to boost your immune system shoudl help in the long run.

Greensleeves · 23/11/2006 20:33

lol, am sittin ghere now with the second tube of Zovirax and a white moustache , it's actually 2 big cold sores beside each other, together they form the whole of one side of my upper lip, I look as though I have been in a fight!

One questions been running through my head....WHY?

Greensleeves · 23/11/2006 20:35

Why wot?

ledodgychristmasjumper · 23/11/2006 20:36

You also need to rub the Zovirax in so the cold sore can dry up! Tea tree oil dries them up brill as well but honestly ask your gp for the tablets getting them was one of the best things i've ever done. Cold sores are horrible and make you feel so ill one of my pet hates is friends who say they've got a cold sore when really they ahve a crack on their lip.

charliecat · 23/11/2006 20:37

why cold sores?

FrannyandZooey · 23/11/2006 20:37

Greeny you only make up thread titles like this to annoy me

it is purely attention seeking, you could have easily said "the size of a small bowl of lentils" or "as large as a mooncup, size B"

Greensleeves · 23/11/2006 20:39

Heh heh, here she comes like a tramp to a kipper

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 23/11/2006 21:16

yes that's another of your delightful turns of phrase that needs banning

come over to the pushing a toddler while wearing headphones thread where I am taking your name in vain, and we can have a rematch of last time

NotQuiteCockney · 23/11/2006 21:18

Do tramps particularly like kippers? (Kipper the dog? Or is it some sort of fish?)

And by tramp, do you mean homeless person? Or slutty lady type person?

Ahem.

I have had a cold sore go nuclear, and was given antibiotic ointment by the dentist. Sometimes coldsores get infected maybe? I'm not sure, but it did sort it out. How long have you had the cold sore?

lucykate · 23/11/2006 21:23

cold sores are the pits, everyone in my family suffers from them. i find boots own cold sore cream works better for me than zovirax. have you seen the advert on tv for a new thing, cold sore patch? although, the lips used on the advert do not actually appear to have a cold sore

FrannyandZooey · 23/11/2006 21:33

She means a gentleman of the road, NQC

and I think she has had this cold sore for about 18 months judging by the amount of times she has mentioned it

(am so enjoying you all being out of hospital so I can be rude again, instead of all cloyingly nice to you, Greeny )

NotQuiteCockney · 23/11/2006 21:44

Homeless people really like Kipper the dog? [confused emoticon]

Greensleeves · 23/11/2006 21:53

It's not the same cold sore, you lentil-addled loon

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 23/11/2006 22:17

Well put it this way, there have not been many periods where you haven't had a thread in active convos with a cold sore in it

I think it is the same one and you just hide it when we meet up

Greensleeves · 23/11/2006 22:22

That's right, mock the afflicted

It does look a lot like a slimy wet bran flake though

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 25/11/2006 13:15

How are you now you crusty old baggage?

WeWishUAMerryXmasNANappyNewYr · 14/12/2006 02:25

rub some grapefruit seed extract onto it.
