My 11 year old has just rebroken her arm in the still mending places from her August break. The first was a nasty displaced fracture of both bones in the middle of the forearm, but was successfully manipulated under general anaesthetic and plastered for 6 weeks.

We were given the all clear, she avoided sports and situations likely to rebreak it for a further three weeks, as instructed, and she ought to have regained full enough strength, according to the orthopaedic registrar by now.

Alas, she fell on it today at the start of a cross-country run (raining on bloody Dartmoor

  • slippery as hell) and has rebroken it in the same places. One bone is very slightly displaced, the other is not.

The orthopaedic registrar thinks she might need to have an operation, and they're going to look at her x-rays from the summer and decide how to proceed.

She is a tiny 11 (136cm), not pubertal yet in any way, and still has lots of growing ahead of her.

Has anybody out there had this happen to their child, and how did your child's doctors proceed (pinning or plastering?), and what was the outcome?
