injection in hip for arthritis pain

Has anyone had this done? I've got the procedure tomorrow, but the info from the hospital just tells me what to bring with me and not what to expect. I thought I was all cool with it, but now I'm really anxious and when I rang the hospital about 4pm nobody answered, so now I'm frightened and googling.

Is it a steroid injection OP?
I've had several in knees and elbow. They can be a little bit sore when they do them, and for a day or two afterwards, but can be very effective.

Is it a steroid injection? I have had these in my knees and elbow a few times. Yes, they are uncomfortable and you can feel the needle slightly but they are only a bit ouchy and not what I'd call painful. An experienced doctor will spend a minute or so feeling for the space to inject then mark it up while you lie still and then have the injection, the injection itself takes a few seconds as they fill the space with the steroid.
Hope that helps, oh and take magazines as you'll have to lie still for a little while afterwards too. The good thing is they work really well usually and you can feel a difference within a few hours.

I've had a hip injection, for diagnosis purposes. When I had mine done I had to gown up and lie on a table. They used an xray machine that hung over the table to take a few images to check that the needle was in the right place. The area was numbed first so it wasn't too bad. It was a bit uncomfortable but was only painful enough to make me say 'ow' for a split second, then it was done. I've had a lumbar puncture and it wasn't anywhere near as bad as that.

I was told not to drive for 24 hours. They injected a long acting pain killer into the joint at the same time so it didn't hurt that day. I was warned that I would possibly find the joint more painful for the first day or two (I did) but then that the pain should be relieved for a while by the steroid which takes a day or two to start working (hence the pain killer too).

I've had it done in my hips. Both hips on the same day, drove afterwards. Like PP, there is a mild anaesthetic within the injection so it isn't immediately painful but feels tender for a couple of days afterwards, and the actual injection itself is quite sharp, but over very quickly.

Mine wasn't for arthritis pain, it was something to do with fluid sacs, and I was told there was a chance it wouldn't work, or that it would need to be repeated after 3 months on an ongoing basis.

I had my first steroid injection in my elbow 5 months ago. I was very anxious about it & no one was willing to allay my fears. I swear I felt nothing! I was waiting for the Dr to give me the injection & she was already packing her stuff up having finished. Was quite possibly the best thing I could have done. Am due to get knee done soon & I'm really not concerned. My elbow ached a wee bit for a day but not nearly as sore as the joint was because of arthritis. Good luck! :)

Thanks, but I turned up at 7.30 on a Saturday morning, only to be told they'd cancelled me and rebooked for next Saturday, but not bothered to tell me this. This has, of course, given me enough time to go right off the idea and cancel all together. I kept imagining the needle as being the size of a knitting needle.

Back to plan A of physio and dieting.

The weeks of pain relief I had following the injection were def worth the split second of discomfort. I seem to remember they showed me the needle and it was long and bendy but thin.

Don't cancel, the injection really does work and is so worth it. The needle will be long but isn't anywhere near as thick as a knitting needle so don't panic.

I have it in both hips for bursitis.
Honestly it's fine plus the relief from the pain is well worth it!
