Should I be concerned?

He will be 9 in January.

He just seems less fitter than the rest of the team.

He is very slim so his weight isn't an issue.

He's just putting in a lot of effort - good for him! His fitness will improve in time - my 2 enjoyed getting together with their mates and running round the school field at break time.
Swimming is also good for improving fitness if you are able to take him.

Did he have a meal beforehand

My mum used to say that you get a stitch cos your tummy is digesting the food and you are wanting the muscles to have the energy

iyswim

So if that is the case feed him a couple of hours beforehand
