worried about lump in breast

I found a tiny lump in my right breast a couple of weeks ago, it is like a small pea sometimes I struggle to find it but it's definitely there. It aches around the area and the lump itself is tender is this a good or bad sign? I went to the doctor a few days ago and I have to go to hospital next week, she said she has to send me just incase, I asked what she thought it felt like she said it probably does feel like a cyst but we need to check. I'm terrified, I'm 28 with a 1 year old daughter all sorts of things are going through my mind. I guess I'm just looking for reassurance really..

hi butterfly, this happened to me last year too and made my mind go into overdrive - I have a strong family history of breast cancer, both my mum & aunty died in their 50s with my mum being misdiagnosed for yrs.

however for me it turned out to be a cyst only and i was told there & then at the scan. i believe the vast majority of lumps are harmless but always best to get it check.

Thank you for replying, I'm glad to hear yours was nothing to worry about, given your family history you must have been so worried! You can't help but think the worst though, so many people get bad news these days. I wish my appointment was sooner it's going to feel like a long wait, I keep checking the lump all the time x

butterfly, most women who get referred come out smiling. I think it's 9 out of 10 or something, but even if you're unlucky and turn out to be the 1 out 10 most of those women end up being okay too. Breast Cancer's dealt with really well by the NHS these days. I was one of the unlucky ones, so have been through it all. I won't deny that it's terrifying, but ultimately the majority are like me, so mainly it's a massive shock and a slog to get through the treatment, but then there's life on the other side. Smee, I'm glad to hear everything is ok with you know it must have been very scary! I'm not worried for me, well obviously I am a bit but it's more my dd I keep thinking about and what it would mean for her if I got bad news , I am a total worrier so always think worst case scenario! What age are you if you don't mind me asking I just seem to hear more younger people being diagonsed with breast cancer these days so not sure that the fact I'm only 28 reassures me or not!

I was 44, but anyone younger than 50 is deemed young to have it. They are finding more and more younger women with it, but I think that's just because as women we're more aware. Try not to worry - odds are still v.much that it's nothing and even if it is something, you can do it. If I can anyone can - my son was only 5 when I was diagnosed and we got through it all okay.

Hi, I am 32 with a 1yo baby, and I found a lump in my breast a couple of months ago. GP referred me to breast clinic who did examination, ultrasound, and biopsy. It turned out to be a calcified galactocele - so basically a pocket of milk that got trapped and went hard. Absolutely nothing to worry about and hospital staff were very nice.

Hope yours is similarly simple! Apparently galactoceles are quite common when stopping breastfeeding, if that applies to you?

Oh, I have a poor family history of female cancers too, so was a bit worried before getting it checked out!

Yes smee 44 is still really young! I know of somebody who lost their battle with it earlier this year in her 30's and I think that's scaring me.
giraffe I only breastfed for the first day dd was badly tongue tied and I gave up, there was lots of colustrum though and funnily enough the same breast leaked now and again for about 3 months so maybe it's connected, fingers crossed! I'm pleased it turned out ok for you!
