any good tips for symptomatic relief of earache?

ds (3) had his first ever earache last night. came on suddeny...dh thinks bloked sinus and ear tubes in aftermath of a cough he's had.

he was really really distressed (probably as he is rarely ill and has almost never been in pain, and also as earache is horrible).

i just wondered if there was anything I could have done other than calpol/medised?

He is absolutely fine today, no pain, chirpy and cheeky and went to nursery this morning.

i seem to remember that when i had earache when i was little my gran would put warm oil on a cotton wool ball and that would help the pain almost immediately....i expect tha tthey advise you not to do that anymore (any idea why?)

any other tips?

we put a bowl of hot water with olbas oil in it in the room.

calpol and medised both have paracetomol, so you have to give one or the other.

You can alternate, though, beween nurofen and calpol every 2-3 hours, though, had to do this myself last week for DS earache. don't exceed max dose for each in 24 hours.

leaning his head on a warm hot wqater bottle may have helped. I would also do the cotton wool ball thing also

it if keeps happening you may want to checl whether he has lots of wax or an infection

I he has lots of wax then wax drops regularly work really well to loosen and ease the pain, but if it's an infection then putting wax drops in would hurt more IME

dd1 is currently having antibiotics for an ear infection.
