Suspected hayfever

Ds2 (12yo) has had red sore looking eyes on and off for the last few weeks. Red rimmed eyes, not red whites IYSWIM.

He has decided he has hayfever and I suspect he could be right, but he's never suffered before. No other symptoms as yet.

Do I just self-diagnose and treat with anti-histamines if necessary, or do we need a "diagnosis". What would doctor do (anything?) if I took him?

As long as he's not got any other health issues, or allergies, I'd probably just treat him with otc antihistamines.

Actually no, I'd possibly take him in to see the pharmacist and ask them, they'd know whether it looked like an eye infection or an irritation.
