ds had his hypospadias repair yesterday

Bless he was brilliant, canula went in without even a flinch, straight off to sleep, just a bit of trouble with bladder spasms but well dosed up on pain killers.

He jsut doesn't like looking at his bandage he finds something to cover it up and says 'I don't like it'

But he's been such a star, keeping him on chair rest over the next week is going to be the challenge. How on earth are you supposed to keep a 2 1/2 yr old still for a week?

DVD's dvd's dvd's. Get someone to go out to buy some interesting new books/jigsaws and a new dvd to watch ad infinitum.
Glad all went well - must admit that I have occasional terrors about how to cope if we're confined to quarters. Was bad enough when initially potty training - I was climbing the walls.

Oh I hope he recovers quickly. I guess he's old enough to feel a bit distressed. Clever boy to say clearly what bothers him!

As for chair rest, how about good old Cbeebies?
Other ideas:
Blowing bubbles up towards the ceiling.
Making your own Son et Lumiere shows, with him operating lights.
Toy library, so that he can have lots of new and interesting toys without you spending the earth.

My ds had an appointment re his hypospadias on Monday - he's only 14 months, they hope to operate between 18m-2yrs, I think.

Would you mind giving updates about his recovery. I'm always told it's quite a common condition but there doesn't seem that many archived threads on it. Thanks.

bamboo dumbledoresgirl was really helpful to me her ds's have the condition one already operated on one soon.

He is fine in himself. Its a good job he's a bit of a square eyes and loves the telly so much. He has done some stickers and stencils today but cbeebies been on alllllllll day.

It seems if we move him about he has bladder spasms so if this keeps on I will ring gp and see if we can increase the medication that helps with the spasms.

It's really kind of you to offer to field any questions. I may contact you further down the line if that's OK. My brother had the op at age 2ish, and then a follow up one shortly afterwards but 35 years on I think my parents have forgotten the detailed stuff, which is understandable, I guess.

Hi all, my DS had his hypospadias repair last week and we have just had the dressing taken off and all is well - thank god it's (hopefully) all over. We had a few questions in the week between the op and the removing the dressing and we kept ringing the hospital who were lovely about it all. We did have to take him back in one night when he started bleeding quite badly under the dressing - not to worry you, just to say that things happen but just call the hospital if you have any concerns. All was fine and the bleeding stopped after a bit.
My DS was younger than yours so CBeebies was not such a draw for him! I think that because they bandage them up so much there's not much chance of them doing much damage to themselves, so I wouldn't worry too much about keeping him quiet etc.

He is so funny he hates looking at it so if he wants a poo he says 'cover it up with a towel mummy' He is so sweet he got quite upset telling us that his big sisters thought it was funny and its not funny is it mummy. Sounded so sweet and funny when he was saying it.

No probs so far except the spasms that he keeps having opps having one now

Hospital said district nurse would call today but as of yet there is no sign of her. Which means we are going to have to sit in all day tomorrow as well, getting a bit claustrophobic now. Need a change of scenery.

Oh lonwaytogo, I am so pleased for you that the worst of your trauma is over (I hope!) How was it for you? I have been thinking about you lots this last week, since we took ds3 in for his appt with the surgwon who is going to do his op - next April.

Even though I have laready been through this with ds1, I am so not looking forward to putting ds3 through it all. Your ds sounds like he has taken it all in his stride. What a brave boy!

Can you tell me what the spasms are like> My ds1 did not have them although I remember him having some anti spasm medicine to take home in case it happened. I like to know all before I face it, so what are the spasms like?

As for keeping him still for a week - well it is imposssible isn't it? I remember ds1 had to go back to have the plastic covering over the site renewed because he was so active! I also remember taking him for a drive just for a change of scene for him. Perhaps you might think of going on a steam train or something like that this weekend? he deserves a treat poor lad!

hmmm not sure about the treat - money may be a problem. Need to do something with him though, he wants to go to the beach thats all both of them have been on about all week is goign to the beach.

ds goes back in tomorrow for removal of dressings and cathetar - can't believe how quickly its gone.

It's reassuring to hear everyone's experiences. I dabbled in a yahoo group for a time and there seemed to be so many people posting with complications that it really worried me - I uusubscribed in the end. That's the internet for you, isn't it? - it's a double edged sword.

He is fine thanks bamboo, he had to be at alder hey for 10 this morning, had dressings off and cathetar out at 10.20 without even a murmor, the play specialist distracted him with a book and he didn't even flinch.

When he got down to walk he was like a little bambi his legs were all wobbly for about 1/2 hour but he's fine now.

He had a wee about 12 o'clock so we were out by 12.20.

He is such a little star bless him.

omw he has turned into the child from hell.

He hasn't stopped whinging since yesterday and now he keeps battering his sister. He went to playgroup today because I really couldn't cope with him any longer.

He's been on the naughty step and he's still trying to hit his sister with cars.

Op wise he is fine, there is no swelling and he seems to have no pain at all, but I guess he's been through so much in a week that it's no wonder he's being a little monkey.

Hello all again, sorry, we have been away. DS is absolutely fine, although just like LWTG's DS, he seems to have turned into more of a monster than before the op!
Although it was all quite hard at the time, I am really really glad we had it done as now he looks completely normal and can pee standing up etc (which he thinks is very funny!) and seems to have come through the whole thing unscathed.

That's great news howdoo. We've got a date for ds's op - at the end of January. I didn't imagine it would be so soon actually. I was thinking it would be more around the 2 year mark -as it is, he'll be 17 months. It's a bit daunting now but it'll be a relief to get it out of the way. Really helpful to get everyone's experiences. Thanks.

Bamboo, I think that the sooner the better really - you don't have so long to worry and, with a bit of luck, he won't remember a thing about it. We may not tell our DS he even had it done (haven't quite decided) as he certainly won't remember it.
