52 years old Post meno do I need HRT

I had an earlyish menopause - aged about 47. Breezed through it (sorry) so wasn't offered HRT. Starting to worry a bit now about heart disease, brittle bones etc. Mentioned this to lovely GP and she said HRT not given to post-meno women over 50 if they weren't on it before 50.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You only take hurt if you feel rough IMO. As you've had no problems up till now it seems like you got off lightly Grin

Do you feel you need it? How long ago did your periods stop?

ragged · 12/06/2015 20:34

Don't fix what ain't broke.

Nell - about 5/6 years ago. I thought I read something saying that HRT now recommended for women past 50 to prevent heart attacks and osteoporosis.

I think that advice is outdated, and now HRT only broadly recommended for people with early menopause (under 45, 50 or 52 depending which source you consult). See here.

Are you at particular risk of osteoporosis? Have you had a bone scan? Does osteoporosis run in the family?

RitaFairenough · 13/06/2015 17:23

I'm booking a DEXA scan. Assumed I was at risk because of earlyish menopause. My mum died at 50 and her sisters also died before their 60s so have no elder relatives to compare with.
