Brown discharge before period?

I'm defo not pregnant, have pms type symptons - thought my period had staryed but have had brown discharge for last few days but no period? im 39.

I'm probably not much help as 38 and bf a toddler; but my periods have been peculiar since restarting last Xmas. This last one has been like that and one aclittle while ago. I think I worked out it can be old blood, but doesn't hurt to get checked - I had no idea I had thrush last week at a smear.

Yes it's an age thing. Started a few years ago.
Just a warning of impending period.
