Recurrent Wisdom Tooth Infection

Hi,
Would appreciate any advice before I speak to my dentist.I have one Wisdom tooth lower which has grown horizontally .Only discovered this a month ago as previously no problems.However, I have had Pericoronitis twice in May requiring antibiotics.Pain, swollen glands, earache,pain in throat when swallowing .Never had this before.Finished antibiotics yesterday.Today, dull pain under ear.I wouldn't be running to get this removed and hoping it will just disappear but.... I just dont know..Any help appreciated thanks

You really need to see your dentist. Why are you worried about having it removed, if it's the cause of your pain?

BTW, when you say growing horizontally, do you mean it's growing sideways?? If it's not growing in alignment with your other teeth, that's probably because your jaw is not big enough to accommodate it. I have one of those which has not been removed. It's now pushed all my other teeth out of alignment, so I am considering having a brace to avoid increasingly crazy teeth. In case you need any further motivation .

Yes sideways .I haven't discussed having it removed as the dentists attitude was lets see how things go before a decision needs to be made.Obviously I would prefer to have it removed if needed.No suggestion was made about it moving other teeth.Poor you ??thanks !

I had one that didn't quite have room to fully get through and it kept getting infected. Had it done in the end (in hospital under GA due to root resting inconveniently on the nerve and dentist being too nervous to go near it).

Neat job, couple of days or so pain relief and a week on precautionary anti_b's and haven't looked back since. Well worth it.

Oh, should have added they took the top one out too as apparently they overgrow with nothing to bite on

Better out than in if causing you problems. Better out at a younger age than when you are older and take longer to recover, too.

tictac I had the bottom one removed that matches with my sideways one - so maybe that made things worse for me?!?

OP, I had four impacted wisdom teeth, they were all growing sideways and I'd get repeated infections - I'd go to bed looking normal and wake up looking like I'd done 10 rounds with Mike Tyson.

Having them taken out is one of the best things I've ever done!

Ah, thanks for taking time to reply.My mind is racing today as I am the worlds worst most needle / blood phobic person ever.Please tell me that this can be done being sedated.The thoughts of a general for one tooth sounds like major work.Tonight I come to the end of my antibiotics, still have swollen glands but no gum soreness at all.I am glad ye are having a good time since ye got them removed x

You won't miss them for sure! Short term discomfort of extractions for long term gain of better everything (no pain, bad taste etc).

Thank you so much.This is my second round of infection this month but ended with a doctor at weekend not my dentist as we were away on holidays.
My last conversation with my dentist did not involve a discussion on removing it as it was my first ever infection.I am anxious now to discuss things further at my next appointment.Thanks again

Got my two bottom impacted wisdom teeth done under sedation at hospital, was no bother at all.
I suffered for ages & so glad I plucked up courage to get them out.
Cured me of my dental phobia as well.

I have real probs with my teeth, getting the teeth out proved to myself if I can do that then nothing else could be so worrying.
I'm lucky to have a great dentist as well who has worked very hard to get my confidence up.
Don't keep suffering with it. Ask dentist to refer you to get teeth out under sedation.
Was pretty cheap as well, only around £30-40.

My dentist told me I needed to judge the inconvenience of occasional infections against the major surgery it will take to get my two bottom wisdom teeth out.

This was in stark contrast to my previous dentist who advised me to see a dental surgeon as soon as possible to arrange the extractions.

I am glad I waited as I have been infection free for the last 6 months !

Also, if you are in pain - you can take paracetamol then ibuprofen 2 hours later to knock the pain on the head.

Am lucky to have a fantastic dentist so that's a relief.Contrasting views so f1fan2001.If I am infection free and pain free I will certainly be happy to leave things as they are.Interesting to hear experiences.I am lucky that I have never had any teeth problems or teeth removed in the past so I suppose there's always something !
