Ouch, my foot

What could be wrong with my foot and what should I do.
I have a really sore right foot, with general pain across the top, from my little toe down towards the middle of my foot.
If I rub it, it feels sore on the sole, but really seems to originate on top.
It is much worse when there is no pressure on it, as in when I go to bed it hurts or if I try to elevate it. When I am driving and lift my foot of accelerator or brake it hurts.
Walking hurts, but standing doesn't.
The pain is not constant when it is there, but at night, when no pressure on the sole of my foot, it makes me want to take a painkiller, which I am reluctant to do for a sore foot!
That same leg has also developed the glam 'house maids knee' which started first.
Anyone help?
Also should I try a chiropodist or Dr first?

I think you should get it x rayed. It sounds similar to what my cousin when through and she had a broken bone in it.

I think you need to askfor a referral to a rheumatologist. Those foot and knee pains are the sort of pains I've put up with for years - turns out I have hypermobility syndrome.

I'd recommend experimenting with properly supportive footwear - high sides and tops, rather than ballet flats (which are terrible for your feet), arch supports if you can fit them. You probably need some arch support and if your feet are over-pronating, that will be the cause of the knee pain.

OP a while back I had pain under the front of my foot and across the top too, it was so bad that standing was painful. I also felt like I couldn't lift up my toes or bend them down. It was over a weekend and I was starting to think that somehow with no obvious accident I'd sprained of fractured it so I went to our local urgent care centre. They diagnosed Plantar Fasciitis which is an inflamation normally appearing by the heel, but mine was much further forward. Wearing flats can bring it on and also being on your feet a lot. I was just advised to keep mobile and wear more supportive shoes. It went in a few days and so far hasn't been back. Your symptoms don't sound exactly the same but it might be worth checking out the NHS webpages to see what you think.

Thanks all, that's v useful. I do tend to wear flat, not really supportive shoes and I do stand a lot in my job.
If I went to shoe shop that measures, like Clarks would that be the sort of place for supportive shoes?

They have some good options, but Jones have a few more in different brands and styles. Hush puppies, out of the mid price brands, tend to be more supportive than Clarks. Brands like Joseph Siebel, Ecco and Gabor often come up trumps, too, for work shoes. Also take a look at Hotter - some nice styles in amongst the granny shoes and most have removable insoles so you can replace them with some gel arch support insoles. My choice is restricted by very wide feet, which makes shoe shopping an absolute nightmare.
