I'm covered in spots - doctor hasn't got a clue what it is. Can anyone shed light?

My arms and legs are covered in spots. They have been coming up for 10 days to two weeks now and are about half a centimetre to a centimetre wide. They start bright red, raised and shiny and after a day tone down to a purpley-red colour with flaky white, almost crusty skin in the middle. They do not itch or irritate. The first spots that came up are still hanging around.

My doctor looked confused and prescribed antibiotics. Each day I am getting new spots. Has anyone any ideas? Been taking antibiotics for 4 days out of 7 day course, but no difference. Starting to concern me as I really look like I have got the lurgy!!!!

could it be psoriasis? although surprised your dr didn't know.

Sounds like your Dr hasn't got a clue so they've just chucked antibiotics at you. I'd go back and ask to see a different GP. Do you feel ok?

Quadrophenia · 09/11/2006 19:42

are they painful??

Quadrophenia · 09/11/2006 19:45

does it sound like these atall?

MrsBojangles · 09/11/2006 19:48

maybe an allergic reaction? then again you said it's not itchy.

My father suffered from psoriasis for years and that did itch though, badly! but I think there might be varying severities

I would go back to a different doctor though sounds like the one you saw hasn't got a clue.

I am surfing the web at the moment and am also thinking psoriasis (southeatsastra). Something called guttate psoriasis which is, in essence, spotty psoriasis. But why now???? What has triggered this? Could this be what I have? Doc obviously felt guilty giving me antibiotics because she asked "... is that ok...?" after suggesting them.

my mil has got psoriasis at the moment. she thinks they were caused after she had brochitus. have you had a virus lately

JennyJJ · 09/11/2006 19:52

... they do not itch ... or irritate. There are LOADS of them and they look AWFUL. My legs are literally covered.

Not had a virus, but had a really bad flare up of urticaria 3 weeks ago which is a nasty skin condition that I have dealt with for the last 15 years. I have taken anti-histamines EVERY week for the last 15 years of my life for chronic urticaria. Never had spots like this though.

my mil has loads of them on her arms and legs, she uses a cream called Alphosyl HC. i'd go back to the dr

JennyJJ · 09/11/2006 20:09

southeastastra - does your MIL have clearly defined SPOTS???? Mine are only on my arms and legs. Has yr MIL been told it is psoriasis?

yes she's been diagnosed with psoriasis. she has large spots from small penny size to quite large ones. the doctor prescribed the alphosyl cream. the only other time she'd had them was just after she had her son. she's had them about 3 months now

southeastastra · 09/11/2006 20:26

should add she's had them a long time because she doesn't want to see the dr.

liath · 09/11/2006 21:10

Could be pityriasis rosea - it can look a bit like guttate psoriasis. You typically get one patch first then lots of smaller patches & it goes on for weeks. DH had it recently. Agree that your GP sounds a bit clueless I'm afraid.

liath · 09/11/2006 21:12

Actually, just read it's on your arms & legs so pityriasis less likely. Sorry!
