Help. Just been diagnosed with it,Hmm. Any advice? Can I still run? I got a letter to tell me after a Dexa scan. That was it. Need to see GP urgently it says. What kind of treatment can I expect?

How old are you? Pre- or post-menopausal?

Lagoonablue · 13/05/2015 21:14

I have it. I take a high dosage of calcium twice a day and a bone plasticiser once a week.
I'm sure that running will be good for your condition as impact activities are recommended to 'bone-load' - give the bones the message to keep strong. It's when you don't do bone loading that trouble sets in.

The only downside is that the calcium tablets taste like chalk.
But my nails are the best they have ever been.

Thanks for replying. That's really helpful to know. All I got was a letter to say I had it and go and see GP. All I know about it is what is on Internet, some of which is quite scary!

I have it I am 45 & it's from having Anorexia. I take high stength Vit D & calcium. I am going to have an injection called Prolia. It's a 6 monthly injection. I am in Australua & it's really expensive $300. I can't afford it at the moment. I have to pay for a private prescription as u don't qualify for it at the cheaper price as it's only available for menopausal women. I have bone scans every 2 years & blood tests. I do aerobic exercise. I don't have any symptoms so I wouldn't know I had it without the scans. They're is an Osteoporosis society if you want to read up on the treatments. I couldn't tolerate the other medications used.
