Tweaking DD's diet to improve her flaky fingernails.

I have always had terribly flaky fingernails and it seems DD has inherited my tendency. I know flaky nails are a sign of a mineral deficiency, but which mineral? Which foods can I give her (and me, for that matter!) which contain it?

I was always told that jelly was good for flaking nails because of the gelatine in it. Or is that an old wives' tale?

Nails, like hair, are made of keratin. I would have thought that as long as you're eating a normal healthy diet the quality of the nails would just be an individual thing - maybe you could rub in sweet almond oil to keep them from drying out and flaking?
