DH has several symptoms of B12 deficiency, according to the NHS website. He has been tested and his level has come back at around 280ng/L which is towards the bottom of the NHS healthy range. Googling suggests this would be medicated in some places. Can any give advice on the best thing to do? Can we get over the counter supplements? Is it worth going back to the GP?

Gp will do nothing, get him on sublingual methyl cobalamin 500ug or 1000ug daily. You could push for pernicious anemia testing but most labs/gps won't do it if bloods are in range. He needs to be getting to the 500 mark.

I should say the GP has said he is perfectly healthy but has prescribed antidepressants for clinical depression. Which he may also have of course.

Thanks, ELR. Can we get that in health food places/chemists?

I use natures own you can buy online or in independent health food shops but you can get different ones on amazon I think jarrows is quite popular. I would hold off on the ADs if possible as low b12 can cause similar symptoms..

Thanks. We've got a decent independent place near us so I'll have a look. Googling suggests he should also take folic acid - is that normal, do you know?

He should take a b complex also. I used to get b12 shots at home but cant be arsed jumping through the hoops here.

I would suggest b12 sublingual 1000 and b complex daily for 3 months then take a break and see how he feels.

It may help with his depression too.

Thanks, Dinky. I'll see what I can pick up tomorrow. He's in his 40s and never had depression before so I think it may well be part of this, but he has been pretty bad recently so think he'll probably start on the ADs too just to make sure.

You can get the sublingual vit B 12 (and other ones) from Holland and Barratt.

Thanks, Peace. I'm determined to come home with something tomorrow!
