Longest period for a cold

Am fed up! I am now at 2 1/2 weeks into a cold. It started with aches, then sneezing but mostly I'm coughing with a blocked up nose and a head feeling like it's stuffed with cotton wool and nothing tastes of anything.

Over the counter remedies aren't really touching it, anything else such as honey and steaming my face bring temporary very relief for one symptom only.

I'm Ok at night and wake up feeling good (breathing through my nose comfortably for example). However, as soon as I get up I'm coughing like I have a 40 a day habit and my nose feels as if it occupies half my face.

Any different tips, experience or hope out there? Don't want to go to the Dr, can't imagine that they'll say anything other than 'virus'.

My husband and I had this recently. We coughed for over four weeks. I spoke to my DCs who are Doctors. In fact one Skyped me and I was coughing so much that she said that she was going, because I was doing more coughing than talking.
I asked her if I needed ant- biotics and she said ' no Mother it is a virus'
My ribs ached from coughing. I did have Codeine linctus which helped me sleep and drank loads of hot water with lemon slices in.
It was horrible while it lasted as I was dripping with gunge.
You have my utmost sympathy.
I think It gets serious if you are coughing up blood and are very short of breath and your temperature is consistently high. Otherwise, you just have to stick it out. Sorry

There is something like that going around us. I keep hearing this horrible cough. It's been 2 weeks and it looks like it's finally abating.
