Had my first just before Christmas. I was quite chilled about it and found it didn't hurt, either during or after. I said it was my first and she talked me through it, made me feel the brush thing to show it wouldn't hurt etc. the worst part really is all in your head!

Thanks alia, worries me to as the practice nurse is known for being a bit of a grump! Confused

I would book a double appointment. Explain that you are nervous. The brush thing they use now is so much better than the old spatula thingy.

I have a massive phobia of internal exams, but have overcome it enough to actually have smear tests. Good luck.

I had my second one this morning.

Nurse was lovely. She sat me down and asked general questions such as date of last period, any coil etc.

You get changed behind a curtain and lie down on the bed, they usually provide a "modesty towel" to cover your pubic area.

Then they apply jelly and will use a plastic speculum, stretch it slightly and locate the cervix.

I didn't even notice she had begun using the brush, let alone feel it!!

The only little bit of discomfort I felt was a slight pinch as she opens the speculum, but my cervix faces to the side which is rather uncooperative of it Grin

All over in seconds.

Wineo Grin

Honestly, it's over so fast you wondered what the worry was for!

Even the worst smear test is much easier to deal with than an internal in my experience. For a start your body is not under stress during a smear and secondly, if the nurse sees you are in discomfort / pain she will stop.

Thanks everyone!

I'm hoping your all right!!! Grin I'm going from one extreme (it's going to be agony) to the other (it'll take seconds) let's hope it's the latter!
