hysterectomy

Hi. I've been told that I need a hysterectomy but I need to decide whether to have an abdominal or laparoscopic one. My consultant who I like and trust does abdominal but could refer me to a colleague for laparoscopic. Does anyone have any knowledge/experience or advice? I do not have a prolapse womb and I have never given birth.

I would always recommend a laparoscopic/vaginal hysterectomy. I had one and the healing time is far quicker as there is no long incision to heal.
Can depend if you need it for v. large fibroids I think.
Good luck.

They don't need to do a hysterectomy for fibroids. The consultants do still routinely offer a hysterectomy and forget to mention that there are other options until they are asked by the patient.

As poppy says, healing for laparoscopic is a lot quicker then for a open procedure.

Thanks for advice. Shorter recovery time is a bonus, just a shame as I trust my current consultant. It's not fibroids.

Must be a huge decision for you Thanks Sad An open procedure takes longer for them to do, for the patient to recover and there's a rather large scar. My mother had this one and was in hospital for just under a week and could do very little after she was discharged (it was yonks ago). Keyhole leaves a few tiny scars and the recovery is a lot quicker.

Thank you x

I went in for a keyhole and vaginal hysterectomy but ended up with an abdominal hysterectomy when I was in theatre due to scar tissue from a previous c section. Longer recovery but I would go with who you trust and feel comfortable with. It's a big decision. Feel free to pm me if you have any questions.
