Bacterial throat infection

Hope someone can help. I've been diagnosed with a bacterial throat infection and am feeling absolutely awful! Haven't eaten solid foods for three days, on day 2 of antibiotics and there seems no light at the end of the tunnel.
Any suggestions on what I can do to ease my symptoms? Have tried gargling with warm salty water but it doesn't help. Actually feels like a have a sharp rock in my throat. Help!

How many tablets have you already taken in? I remember when I had a strep throat it felt much easier after the 2nd pill. I was given augementin. Some antibiotics are weaker. If tomorrow you still feel unwell you should go to your GP and ask to change the antibiotics. Once I had an earache and only third antibiotic helped. The GP started with one which did not work and then the second did not work either. Good luck.
Honey is good, e.g. manuka 20+ if you can afford.

Ibuprofen should help with the inflammation and thus the pain Thanks

I've always been given co-codomol with severe sore throats. Also try and drink plenty of fluids and if you can't eat try soup and things like build up shakes to keep your strength up. Hope you feel better soon. Flowers

Just over this myself, lasted about 10 days:-(
Strepsil plus anaesthetic lozenges helped keep the throat numb.

Strong painkillers and difflam spray ( contains a local anaesthetic)

goshhhhhh · 15/04/2015 06:41

Also drink lots of hot drinks.

I get this twice a year now and I feel your pain.
Boil a cup of water in a pan, add honey (any. 2 tsp) ginger (peeled, sliced) simmer for 2 mins - drink.
You could add saffron threads/ cardamom/cloves if you wish and have them around.
I just for find it hard to drink warm plain water and this in a flask keeps me going and soothes the pain. Get better soon!

Thank you all so much. Milka I am taking clarithromycin. They are like bloody horse pills. Been taking them since Monday and no difference so may well have to go back to my GP.

Clarithromycin is an appropriate choice of antibiotic for tonsillitis. It may just be that your sore throat is due to a virus after all (sometimes hard to distinguish clinically). Do see your GP though if things don't improve soon - just in case you are developing a complication like a quinsy.

Hope you feel better soon - remember the difflam!

I've had strep throat once. It spread to my eye. Was horrific. If second the anaesthetic throat spray - that stuff is amazing. Other than that, lots of drinks. Lemon, honey and ginger in hot water is good. Gargling with soluble aspirin is meant to help too. Feel for you, I had it for 2 weeks but antibiotics were changed halfway through so hopefully they've already got you on the right stuff.

I had bacterial tonsillitis a few years ago and ended up in hospital as I couldn't keep down water or antibiotics Shock It cleared up quickly once I was able to get them through an IV, I still remember how painful it was though, hope you feel better soon Flowers

My H had this and it turned into a quinsy. He ended up a week in hospital. Please go back to GP., as the ABs should have had some effect by now at least.
