Have just been diagnosed with a likely gastric ulcer. Its bloody painful and I don't know what to eat. I don't seem to want to eat at mealtimes but am hungry at other times.

All doctor has told me is "eat soft foods and nothing spicy"

which is not really a huge amount of help.

I have no idea how long it is likely to go on for- I have medicine to reduce stomach acid - for 2 weeks.

Can anyone enlighten me any more? In particular I would like to know - now I've got this lovely ulcer is it with me forever or will it go away? If it goes away will it keep on coming back in the same place every time I eat spicy food? Will I ever be able to eat all my favourite Thai food again?

Please someone cheer me up. Feeling pretty miserable about it all at the moment. I have a uni paper due tomorrow but my lovely ulcer keeps on making itself known so am not making much progress

thanks

I was diagnosed with an ulcer about 2 weeks ago.The pain was dreadful-like REALLY bad hunger pains. The most important thing is to be tested for a bacteria that is present in 90% of cases. If the blood test is pos. you have double antibiotic therapy and they double the dose of acid reducing med. you are on.I tested neg. to this but expected to as my lifestyle asked for an ulcer ! If you test pos. your ulcer will be treated and should stay away.
I now eat breakfast and lunch, which i have missed for probably 15 years.I eat a light tea before 7pm and have started drinking milk (hated the stuff all my life ).Have cut my alcohol right down and make myself sit down to eat. I stay off brufen. It took about 2 weeks for the pain to settle, but i managed it by coming down in the night for a small drink of milk and some bread-every 2 hours, then 3 ect. until eventually the pain stayed off until morning.I hope this helps and that you are feeling better soon.
