gynae woes

I'm 40 & have had two years of increasingly unpleasant periods - short cycles (26 days from 32 before), bleeding for ages (8/9 days), heavy bleeding for 3/4 days & days of spotting at the end of my period, crampy pains that seem to last for ages & horrendous PMT.

When it all started I had blood tests (FBC/thyriod/ca125 etc), swabs, pelvic scan, smear ... everything was normal except for a small (2cm?) fibroid. It was put down to age/hormones & left at that.

This morning I had some bleeding after sex - on day 10, 2 days after my period had supposedly stopped - I've just come back from my GP. She's done more bloods (FBC/ferritin/B12) for excess bleeding, swabs & referred for another scan. She said my cervix looks normal & I'm up to date with smears; she suspects it is further lengthening of my periods &/or the fibroid has grown (hence the scan).

I'm not sure what to think - is this normal? An age thing? Do I have to put up with it?

first no-body should have to 'put up with it'. i have no experience with this, but you need answers to put your mind at ease.

Any questions you have, write them down (we all forget to ask the questions we should due to nerves!!).

I hope you get it sorted soon. x

thanks DeeDee ... my own GP is on leave until mid May, unless anything drastically changes I guess I'll just sit tight & hope the scan doesn't take too long to come through.

saw my proper GP today - I'm anaemic so she's given my stuff for that & she did the ca-125 blood test which I always worry about and referred me to the gynae clinic ... they will scan & diagnose/treat all in one appointment & discuss treatment.

She thinks it is most likely a cervical polyp, the fibroid getting bigger or age related hormone changes ... very unlikely to be anything more serious according to her. I'm glad I have the referral & hope I don't have too a long wait!
