Feeling worn down by RA flare up in joints

Hi there

I'm in so much pain and feeling down about it. Has been so long since I've felt this bad, just want to have a moan.

Diagnosed 15 years with RA in knees and ankles. Effectively managed over the years with various medications, most recently Enbrel, with great results. Relatively pain free over last 3 years.

Diagnosed last summer with Crohn's disease, now come to terms with it, on Infliximab which has worked so far, three induction infusions helped both Crohns' symptoms and RA symptoms.

Very heavy cold for last two weeks, feeling exhausted with that and now my joints start to play up. Gnawing pain in knee caps, taking co-codamol and ibuprofen turn about throughout the course of the day, doesn't feel like it is helping much. Knees swollen like balloons, ankles much the same.

Rheumatology nurse booked me in for appointment early next week to get steroid shots, cannot go ahead if my cold persists.

I am trying to take things easy, luckily kids still at school but off from 3 today for two weeks. Husband hands-on thank goodness and around a bit to help. Sitting with legs elevated, warm baths, wheat bag, trying to shuffle round a bit so I do not seize up totally. Pillow at night time helps a bit.

What I think has shocked me the most is how draining and ever present the pain is. I've been so lucky over recent years to not feel like this, I cannot imagine how hellish it must be to wake up every day and feel as low as this. I am trying to distract myself with reading, telly and texting friends, I know it will pass and things will improve, I just have to be patient.

It's a wake-up call. I need to look after myself better so I don't get into this state again.

Does anyone else go through this? Chronic health conditions or injuries cause pain? Please tell your experiences, it'd help me a lot. Thanks.

Can anyone relate to this?

Hi there! Yes I can totally relate to how you are feeling. I was diagnosed about 5 years ago, currently on cimzia injections and 7.5mg of prednisolone which is keeping me functioning as long as I don't catch a cold or infection. When infection strikes or the RA flares I can't move and the pain is awful. Diclofenac is the only anti-inflammatory which makes a difference (unless it's a particularly bad flare when only a steroid inj takes the edge off). Sorry, I'm no help! However I am currently trying various exclusion diets, wheat, dairy to start with so I'm hoping I can take some control over this horrid condition. Hope you ease up soon.

Hi op, I can relate totally. I'm on humira for my psa (psoriatic arthritis) but have been off it the last month due to dodgy blood results. I'm starting to flare up and after just a few days I'm worn out! I forgot how bad it is cos the meds have been so good the last 9 months! It started with tendonitis above my knee and now my toe joints are on fire! I'm hoping I wake up tomorrow and my body has decided against attacking it's own joints....it is bank holiday after all!?....and my 4 yr old dd and 7 yr old ds will need to hunt eggs on Sunday! Easter Smile I hope you're flare eases up soon. You're not alone Flowers

Thanks so much gengis and Icantstoprepeatinglol for your posts, it sucks big time to be in this pain, only others who go through similar can relate to it I think. Interesting idea about exploring your diet, gengis, it does make sense, is always a balancing act- deciding how much of the symptoms you can suffer with how much you enjoy the food.. I have taken a food diary on and off as I now also have lovely Crohns and have seen an NHS dietician. I was on Diclofenac for years but found it wasn't helping my gut- Omeprazole strangely gave me really horrible trapped wind. I think what i need is to go back on an analgesic long-term. It takes several days for it to be of any use as you know. Icantstoprepeatinglol I'm sorry you're feeling so worn out too, no amount of sleep seems to help lift it. And painkillers make you drowsy too. I am sure your kids will understand, can you do a little with them? I find my kids have had to learn to adjust to my times when I am under the weather, I do feel guilty and inadequate but what else can I do. Mine are 9 and 5.

I really appreciate your replies, it helps massively knowing I am not on my own with this horrid pain and permanent condition. I feel so weak and pathetic and hate asking for help, there's no way I could get through it without telling friends the truth or asking them and family for help.

I hope you guys feel fine and have a nice Easter, choccies and all!
