1 poo a week and horrendous gas!

Hi

Our ds has recently started to poo just once a week after daily breast fed poos. When they do come its a huge amount (sorry to be explicit!). We really arent too worried about the irregularity of his bowel movements as we know that this can happen at some times. Our real problem is that he seems to be in alot of pain and straining with bottom wind (gas). These are very explosive and painful to ds!

We have been to see the doc and paed about this and both have confirmed that he is NOT constipated.

Has anyone else had the same problem or can suggest any remedies?

Thanks in advance.

How old is he? Has he started gulping his milk? and is he winded a couple of times duing feeds? It might be worth giving him something like infacol to help him with the wind as it sounds abit like Colic

Both my DS went through a phase of doing very few poos. It came as a shock after the whole newborn 6/8 poos a day.

Is baby Breast fed? My HV said there is very liitle waste produced with breast milk, so there is less to poo. Mine just seemed to store it up, then do one massive explosive up the back & down the legs kind of poo, about once a week.(they both were quite windy too)

Mine used to like it if I layed them across my knees on their belly and rub them on the back.

Our ds is now nearly 5 months old. He is breasts fed and will normally wind a couple of times during the feed. His poos are exactly like you said sockmonkey Really explosive and all over the place - nice! Usually get through a pack of wipes with each one!

He had a terrible night last night, from about 2am-6am basically bearing down and trying to pass wind. I feel so bad for him, the poor little fellow.

My wife is taking back to docs today, hopefully they will say more than last time.

Please keep the help coming, its very appreciated.

do feel for you, my ds now 2 still gets colic which his dietician is trying to find out whats causing it. very frustrating watching them writhe around at night and not being able to do anything for them.

How are things going jacobsdad? Did you get back to the docs?

You have my sympathy, its hard seeing your little one in discmfort and not being able to sort it out. My daughter (3 - 4 months old approx)suddenly changed from pooing several times per day to once every 3 days with periods of acute discomfort before the poo. Passing wind helped a little. We were given the same medical advice as you.

In the end the problem was solved by going to an osteopath. A local one does child clinics and they get a good reputation. Between the end of the session and going to bed for the night she did 2 poos. The next day she pooed like mad as her system cleared itself out and she's been fine (other than the odd occasion) ever since.

The osteopath showed me how to massage her belly to help and recommended cycling her legs. Lying your hand very gently on or slightly over the lower belly is good because the heat helps.
