Anyone have any suggestions on the best things to try to help ease the symptoms of a nasty cold my dd (14wks) has?

She keeps waking cos she is so stuffed up and can't breathe-poor monkey (and poor me!!!)

Poor little mite, she really is very small still. I think nose drops might be your best bet. She'll find it hard to bf if she can't breathe through her nose.

If she sleeps with heaters on, put little bowls of water on top to get some steam.

Drop saline solution into her nostrils before she goes to bed and when she wakes up, this helps loosen the mucus in her nose . Also getting her ready for bed in a hot steamy bathroom will help her blocked nose.

Raise cot/basket at head end.

Steam is meant to be good, helps clear congestion. Run a hot bath and put in a drop or two of olbos oil. (don't put baby in!)

yewcholiptus (sp?) oil is also very good for helping to unblock stuffy noses. If you can get hold of one of those electric oil burners you can put a few drops of lavendar and yewcholiptus on it and this will help her sleep as well.

nhs direct and GP gave these suggestions when DS had a cold at 12 weeks:

  • put some wet washing in his bedroom
  • when having a bath/shower, put him in the bathroom too as steam helps
  • plug-in difusers/carvol on a bib tidied on his cot
  • raise the cot
  • saline nose drops

Funnily enough a bit of vaseline on the bridge of the nose can help. Never believed it till I tried it on DS.

I used to put a pillow under his cot mattress to raise his head a bit.

Here in Hungary they use a thing called an "Orsivo Porsivo" which is this weird nasal suction thing that you attach to your hoover!!! I kid you not! I have tried on DS but he was 4 at the time - did help though!

rebelmum1 · 30/10/2006 13:14

oops sorry, thinking aloud ..

rebelmum1 · 30/10/2006 13:15

It is astonishing though how little we know about our own health and basic ailments. Its something I realised when I was pregnant and had my dd.

rebelmum1 · 30/10/2006 13:16

I rushed my dd to hospital for a bee sting..
