Has anyone had embolisation for a big fibroid?

Hi there

I'm 44, size 12, two children and a big fat 10cm uterine fibroid which is pretty uncomfortable all of the time. I'm trying to avoid major surgery and have come across fibroid embolisation which seems a relatively minor procedure but effective. I can't get another appointment with the consultant till mid May so was wondering if anyone out there had done anything similar?

My sister's had this done but it does depend on where the fibroid is. If it's on the outside and growing on a stalk (like a mushroom) then they can't embolize it as it could break off and cause infection. I have 2 like this and a few internal ones. I'm having a myomectomy in August. The embolization has worked for her up to a point but they are growing again. She had it done 18 months ago.

Hi

I had one done about 3 years ago and it totally cured my horrendous periods. It was only tennis ball sized - so about 7cm.

It was a little spooky having it done without lots of sedation (I wanted to see them doing it out of curiosity- they did offer! So they just ensured I'd feel no pain and allowed me to be fully conscious. Essentially they shoot die into the tubes to check where it is going, then seem to shoot miniscule balls (technical description clearly) to the ends of the tubes to seal the blood supply, which has been feeding the fibroids.

Has worked a treat- however...a myomectomy could well also be great- nothing is the miracle cure - so I am ever watchful and am on Cerazette progesterone only pill to avoid too much Oestrogen which could cause them to grow again.

However as with many ladies issues - you still do need some Oestrogen if you are not producing much yourself or you get other lovely symptoms such as lack of libido. Oh to be 20 again, to be honest!
