Hi, I am thinking of trying beta blockers to try and prevent hormonal migraines. Which beta blockers have you tried? I read that some cause weight gain, I am desperate not to have another drug which can cause weight gain do you know which of the beta blockers are least likely to cause weight gain? I would appreciate any experience you have in this area.

Have you tried 'triptan' drugs, such as Rizatriptan? they have changed my life.

wfrances · 16/03/2015 12:33

ds 11 had topiramate -theyre an appetite suppressant so he has to take them at night.

ShootingStarsinthesky · 16/03/2015 16:27

Hi, thanks for the relies I cannot take any triptans as I am taking Escitalopram and they don't mix well! and did get rid of my hormonal migraines when I took them in the past unfortunately.

I have tried Topiramate which unfortunately did nothing. In fact that only thing that has ever helped has been Amitriptyline which I have taken for the past 5 years but I am fed up with the weight gain and not being able to lose weight.

I'm. on sertraline and whilst I understand the combo of triptans and 'ines' aren't ideal, the risk is extremely low and being able to actually function rather than being crippled by migraines that put me out of action for 3/4 days at a time is worth the small risk for me Smile

Hi. My headache/migraine clinic have put me on nadolol 80mg, brilliant. No weight gain and one migraine in a year xx

susiedaisy · 16/03/2015 18:29

Propranolol 40mg twice daily has drastically reduced my migraines I have been on it for five years now and it's changed my life to be honest. Downside is weight gain and fatigue but I'm prepared to put up with that to get my life back from weekly migraines

kiplingcakes · 16/03/2015 18:41

I am on Propranolol for my migraines and have not noticed any real weight gain on them. They have been like a miracle drug in making me migraine free and not having to deal with 3 days a month of not being able to function like before - bloody marvellous.

Nocturne123 · 16/03/2015 19:03

Ive been on propranolol for a couple of months as id been getting migraines every 2 weeks. I haven't had one since. The only side effect I've noticed is cold hands and feet. They've been brilliant.

ShootingStarsinthesky · 16/03/2015 22:50

Thank you for all your answers. Kiplingcakes can I ask what dose of Propanolol do you take? I wonder if the weight gain side effect could be dose related?

I take 80mg . It's ok I just use it as an excuse to keep the heat on Grin. I actually need to gain some weight so I definitely would've noticed if there had been any weight gain .

I guess it maybe depends on the person. Good luck , migraines are just awful hope you find something to help

kiplingcakes · 17/03/2015 11:40

I take 40mg a day. I was on 80mg but kept forgetting to take the evening pill so my gp said just take morning dose and see if that is enough to keep them at bay - which it is so have stuck to the 40mg. The only side effect I was told about was tiredness, which is kind of difficult to tell, as have 2 small children and a full time job and always seem to be in a permanent state of tiredness anyway!

Good luck in getting help for the migraines and hopefully you can be rid of them.

My GP has given me a prescription for 300mg of Gabapentin (she was enthusiastic about beta blockers). Has anyone tried Gabapentin? Did it work and at what dose? and most importantly did you gain weight?

Sorry about mistake above should have read my GP was not enthusiastic about prescribing beta blockers.
