DS1 has tonsilitis and is on antibiotics. Once he has been taking them for 24 hours will he still be contagious? Someone once told me that after 24 hours of antibiotics you will no longer be contagious.

True or false?

I don't think tonsilitis is contagious per se in the first place, is it?

poppiesinaline · 28/10/2006 13:16

yes, apparently it is. Well, put it this way, I am tonsilitis queen and seem to get it 3 days after being near someone with it. So I assume it must be.

Tonsillitis is contagious - can be bacterial or viral and is spread from person to person via droplet infection from the secretions of the nose and mouth. HTH. (presumably remains contagious until bugs or virus no longer active).

so will he still be contagious after 24 hours of antibiotics?

IMO, he will be contagious until it has gone completely. The reason we are told to take the whole course of AB's is that that is how much it takes to clear the infection. He will still have infection after 24 hours of ab, therefore still contagious!

thanks HauntedSandCastle Thats very helpful. I shall therefore, paint a large red cross on our door

snigger. He is feeling a bit brighter this morning. The tonsils are still pus ridden though.

At least he is now not laying on the sofa saying in a husky voice "Mummmmeeeee, mummmeeeee, my throat, my throat, mummmeeeee, groan groan" like he did all of yesterday.

Now its just

"Ahh errr, My throat hurts when I talk"

"Well, dont talk then!"

If it is viral infection then ABs will make no difference at all and can be contagious.

Bacterial infection is less likely to be passed on to someone else. 48 hours on antibiotics usually is the time that the antibiotics start having an impact and the symptoms reduce - the course should always be completed though, even when you feel better. Also can return to nursery/ school on natibiotics if feeling better.
