its breaking my heart to look at him trying to open his eyes.....

phoned doctors who left me out some eye drops, put some in at 1pm and again at 7. when should i see an improvment and is it normal for him not to be able to open his eyes at all?

ds had this as a newborn, to a lesser extent. Persist with the eyedrops, and if things don't improve get back to the doc.

Pretty normal.

If you are bf, a tiny bit of breastmilk clears up a lot of eye infections, and hurts less than the drops, imo.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 27/10/2006 21:24

Agree with NQC...

Its quite common in newborns.

intergalacticwerewolf · 27/10/2006 21:25

Yes, both of mine had it.

Breatsmilk is good, as is cleaning the area with cotton wool dipped in cooled boiled water. It shpuld clear up fairly quickly. HTH

how long does it last?

Popped in to suggest breastmilk as well. Sounds bizarre, but works for some reason. Definitely worth a try. (Squirt into the affected eye, by the way...)

hairymclary · 27/10/2006 21:25

was going to say the same as nqc, breastmilk is fantastic at clearing it up

eastendgirl · 27/10/2006 21:46

It's true, very common with babies. Made a mess with my ds, washed his gungy eye with some wool cotton, and used the same one for his good eye....of course within a day the bloody infection had spread to the good eye. Still,it is nothing to worry about...

Yes very common both of my DDs had it the doc the HV said it was a blocked tear duck and that they could have up till 12months but it only lasted 6 weeks. just keep bathing.
