I have been prescribed ibuprofen. Stupidly assumed same as normal bought ones and took two - probably therefore only 4 in a day but most days for a week.

Eek? Or don't panic!

Does it say what strength they are?

Lilybensmum1 · 04/03/2015 08:52

I'm guessing they were 400mg each not the 200mg you get over the counter? Have you been taking two four times per day if so that is a lot over.

If it is 2 tablets 4 times a day I would speak to your GP . The dose should be 1200 mg per day which is evenly spaced apart. Ibuprofen should only be taken 3 times per day any way, occasionally where I work we give a higher dose but only under specific guidance.

Can you conform his many you have taken per say and for how long.

mrssmith79 · 04/03/2015 09:03

Max dose for an adult is up to 3200mg / day (although BNF states 2400 recommended, it is possible in certain circumstances to prescribe higher) with no more than 800mg in one dose (evenly spaced doses). Personally, I wouldn't worry about it but obviously if you're concerned that you may have done any damage, seek official advice.

400 mg, I think most days it's been two of these twice a day. There was possibly only one day where I may have taken the third dose. And a couple of days where I only took one dose of two tablets in 24 hours. It's prescribed 1 three times daily.

I can't believe I was so stupid, I've been taking over the counter stuff for so long I just assumed it was 200mg Hmm

Last night I felt odd, hot and agitated, had taken two ibu and two paracetamol but by early morning I was ok. I took one ibu this morning after reading it was one only, and only aftewards thought praps a bad idea.

Didn't see your post Mrssmith, thanks, max I will have taken is 2400 I 24 hours, and 800 in one dose.

Think I'll stick to paracetamol for a day or two and only take an ibu if I really need it to get it out of system.

Silly question but can you be desensitised/ get slight withdrawal with ibu?

I've always eaten before taking.

Dr Google seems to indicate that 100mg x kg body weight is fine (guessing in 24 hours) which would be 5400mg so hoping if mypharmaceutical calculations are right that this is nothing to worry about (but don't repeat mistake) Confused

I've never heard of withdrawal symptoms from ibuprofen (I'm a nurse by the way) but I suppose that's not to say it can't happen. You know your own body better than anyone else so I'd just be vigilant for a day or two and then put it down as a learning experience Smile

Whatever you've been prescribed it for I hope you're on the mend soon Flowers

leadrightfoot · 04/03/2015 21:32

I had 800mg 4 times a day was fine for the 3 years plus and am ahem 20+ years older now ......

Rjae · 04/03/2015 21:46

If it's within the daily maximum dose which I believe is 4x400 mg =1600 mg (over the counter medication, check your regular packet) it will be fine. Even an odd few mg over this won't do any harm except maybe a bit of gastritis, fortunately ibuprofen isn't a big deal in overdose.

Clarella · 05/03/2015 08:49

Thanks - I do seem to get easily affect by meds though, I don't weigh a lot. I think it had been making me feel odd but one is fine. Don't think I'd have worried if a one off it was the week of doing it!
