Increased pulse rate

A couple of days ago, I noticed my heart appeared to be beating fast and my chest felt a little tight. I checked my pulse rate and it was over 100 - I had just got up in the morning so would have expected it to be on the low side.

I am 50 and consider myself to be fit. I go to the gym and run 4 - 5 miles on a treadmill 3 times a week. I am not overweight (BMI 23) and am otherwise healthy. I do not have any colds/viruses which could be causing increased pulse rate.

I have continued to check my pulse rate at intervals and it varys between high 80's when sitting down and 110 when standing up but not doing anything.

Do I need to be concerned about this and should I see a Doctor?

See the doctor - could be a number of things. I have an overactive thyroid and my pulse rate is high when I'm not well controlled.

I wondered if it could be thyroid related - or peri-menopause and stress.
I hate going to the Doctors if I am not actually ill (which I'm not very often thankfully) but also hate worrying about things that don't seem to be going away.

Do you have any other symptoms of overactive thyroid? Weigh loss, feeling hot, shakiness, hand tremor?
