Referred for CT scan after x-ray. Why?

FIL has had a cough for about a month. Has been signed off work a fortnight now and is half way through a second course of antibiotics. GP referred him for an xray which he had today. This afternoon he got a call from the hospital asking him to go for a CT scan on the 17th.

What could it be? He has never smoked and is fairly fit and healthy normally. Googling has some horrible options. :(

Sadly, you are probably right to be concerned.
They must have seen something on the chest x-Ray to organise a CT next week.
Cancer is obviously the worst case scenario but there are other things that show up in the lungs that aren't cancer like some autoimmune diseases, or they may have just seen some scarring that you get with previous infections and need to look at it in more detail.
It will be a worrying time for you all until you have the full picture though.
The GP should have access to the x-Ray report. Can you go with FIL to see the GP and ask for more details?

Hopefully that's what it is. He works in a factory type setting so maybe it's some sort of reaction to the dust? I've asked him to call GP to see if they've had a report through. :( Worrying time.
