Hip arthroscopy surgery

Anyone had this?

I'm due to have it next month and am scared stiff about the recovery and other things.

It's not that bad is it?

Can only be better than the pains I have now?

All advice welcomed

Hi, I had this done a few years ago and no, not too bad a recovery. I was on crutches for a couple of weeks if I remember correctly. There is a bit of pain/discomfort from them having to open up the joint to get the scope in. It does depend on why you are having it done though - ultimately mine was good as it gave me a lot of pain relief but not a long term fix for my condition (I have hip dysplasia) and I ended up having another surgery 9 months later.

Why are you having it done and what is your OS trying to achieve with it?

I have bilateral labral tears so have eventually need both hips done
I also have a cam deformity on the hip and he hopes to shave this too

I'm in almost daily pain and have benn on high strength painkillers for nearly three years.

I need to have it done but now it's here I'm scared at the recover time and being off work for a long time

I had this 3 years ago , where are you having it done .I had mine done in Cambridge and it was fine .

I basically had the same as you a labral tear but also a femoral impingement which had to be shaved .Mine had worn a bare patch in the cartlidge and so I ended up having microbrasion( I think that's the right word) as well so was non weight bearing for 6 weeks which was a pain but we coped .You need to do all the physio as well because that is the key to recovery .

PM me if you want more info, and good luck, I am not completely pain free but have no need for regular painkillers and without the op would definitely have needed a hip replacement by now.

I had mine for a labral tear and had it not been for the dysplasia I probably wouldn't have needed further surgery (I had a THR 9 months after it as the scope found the condition of my joint was shocking). The scope definitely enabled me to get off painkillers and build muscle strength before my THR. There's a good Facebook group for FAI - will try and find the link if you don't have it

The pain over the weekend means I think that I need it done

Watching this thread with interest as I'm due to have my right hip 'done' in the next 6 months or so. (Sooner if the consultant gets his way, closer to October if the person who gives out the surgery dates gets theirs).

I have a femoral cam impingement and they assume there are labral tears that will need repairing. It's taken 4 years to get the point of being offered surgery and I signed the form in a heartbeat as the catching and pain I get in the joint is really getting in the way of my being able to go about everyday activities without thinking carefully.

I am worried about the practicalities and any discomfort after the op but am looking forward to being able to walk, turn, bend and climb stairs without pain.

There was very little pain after the op , it's done with keyhole, the pain comes almost from the way they have to pull the joint apart to get access.I found the worst was the non weight bearing ( not everyone has this) and the fact that I had to avoid turning my hip outwards in bed ,I know this sounds weird but it was just the way to seemed to be .The main thing is to be religious about doing the physio ,

Blimey - mine might be sooner rather than later after all. I got home from work to a phone message asking me to call to book a time to do the paperwork with t a consultant. They 'have a date for me' but can't let me know when it is until I've signed the paperwork.

Except I think I already did last month when I saw the consultant.

I shall see what the phone call brings tomorrow.

I'm beginning to overthink it and panic about the lack of help my dh will be. He's lovely but not great in this sort of scenario.

End of April. Just over ten weeks away. DH has said straight away that he will book that week off. And then see what he can get...

DH can be great when I'm in pain - I had a couple of months off at the beginning of last year with TN and he was fab, if a little helpless.

It's me that's rubbish. I hate making a fuss. Hate it when others are inconvenienced by me and am not looking forward to it all.

I have the op at the end of April and just under 4 weeks later we have a family holiday in Devon. I usually drive but won't be, I think, this year.

Mine is hopefully end of March and hubby wants to go away in May with a 5 hour drive but I'm waiting to see closer to the time.

Also - I'm the same hate to make a fuss and would carry on regardless

Took a vertigo attack last spring and was actually at the train station ready to go to work before I decided I couldn't actually walk without stumbling.

This will be fun - my dad actually asked if we wanted to move in with them for a while. I have politely declined - he would fuss too much

I ignored my hip pain and ended up with a replacement. I won't be making the same mistake with the other, as soon as I get that catch sensation I'll be straight to the gp. I've been told it will almost certainly happen as its already showing signs on X-rays but no symptoms yet

Hi there - sorry to resurrect this thread but would be really grateful to hear how your hip arthroscopy went? I have been recommended one for cam plus labral tear / cyst but am very reluctant to proceed as can’t find any definitive evidence that it gets rid of the pain. I’ve been in pain for a year and it’s become worse in last few months. Starting targeted physio soon. Thank you!

Hi. I had forgotten all about this thread. I'd also love to hear how OPs op went.

My initial date for the op was cancelled at the 11th hour. They had me in a gown and had drawn on my leg and all sorts when they then said there were too many 'dirty' patients (emergency admissions who had not had pre op tests etc) on the ward.

I was given a date 8 weeks later. That went really well. V painful for just the first night. They kept me in despite initially hoping it was a day case hut I dont come out of anaesthetic well and couldn't wee which was required before I could be discharged.

My leg got sore and tried easily and I was given crutches to help but told I could weight bear straight away. I was off work for 6 weeks as am a primary teacher. Had I had a desk job I would have been back much quicker. The trickiest thing of all was not being allowed to flex my hip up higher than 90 degrees. So lots of lounging rather than sitting upright. And I had to have shoes I could just slip my feel into without bending.

It can ache a hit still but is so much better and well worth having gone through the op.

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply! I’m really glad to hear the op worked for you. Did you have any physio beforehand? Where was your pain? The worst of my pain is on outside of hip but I do have some in groin. Today it’s been particularly painful and constant. I’m just absolutely terrified of going through the surgery and long recovery (have a desk job but also do a lot of driving for my three young kids) - only for it not to have any sort of significant impact. Have heard about so many stories where surgery wasn’t successful and people ended up having THR eventually (where outcome are mostly good). Wonder if I should hold out for that instead. But really grateful to hear of some positive stories. Wish I was brave enough to not worry about surgery.
