Teeth Whitening - Highstreet?

oneofeachkind · 05/02/2015 15:21

Looking for advise on or against products available to buy on the high street for teeth whitening? I really would like whiter teeth after quitting smoking 3 years ago (smoked for 12 years) but I cannot afford or justify the extortionate dentist prices.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi, I am a dentist.
Over the counter products are 100 times less strong than what you can get from a dentist. This is because of law restrictions. In order to make a difference to the shade of the teeth you need 6% hydrogen peroxide or equivalent applied for long enough. You can work out how useful a product could be after checking its content. Be aware that abrasives (e.g. baking soda) or acids (e.g. lemon juice) can be damaging and definitely not recommended for whitening.
