Bone Marrow problems

Drs have said to my 71 year old dad who has been in hospital for 2 and a half weeks that he has probably got bone marrow oroblems. They won't say anything else at the moment to him.

Any ideas? Obviously I'm thinking cancer. Lost my son to brain cancer last February. Just want any other suggestions and to be prepared without resorting to Dr Google.

Hi min

There are lots of bone marrow problems which are not cancer. The bone marrow is a blood cell factory. If he has low cell counts they will look at bone marrow function. Not sure about this but I think it can be quite common in more elderly people. It could be aplastic anaemia, MDS or PNH which are all not cancer. Obviously it could be a cancer, but you'll just have to hope for the best and wait and see what the doctors say I guess.

Is he anaemic? Does he have a lie white cell count? Jaundice? Any other pre existing conditions?

I'm not an expert or a professional at all, just spend a lot of time in the haematology waiting room!

Hope you get some answers soon

Thank you Achange. I have spent too many years myself looking at blood counts with regards my son. I know too much info but too little as well. Will just have to wait it out - he has a rheumatologist and a haemotologist visiting him today so hopefully we will get answers soon. This is on top if my mother awaiting a possible liver cancer diagnosis. It's no fun and games in the Minmooch household.

I'm so sorry for your loss minmooch, and that this is all happening to your family. Seems like some people get all the bad luck sometimes Flowers
