Especially adults? Apparently this Sudden adult death syndrome is on the increase and it is linked strongly with heart murmur/arrythmia's!

My BIL has just found out he has this - he is 32 He has been advised to stop strenuous exercise which is a shame because he loves to hike in the hills but not safe now.

notasheep · 19/10/2006 14:00

I have a heart murmur.i have had a scan and been told that 10% of the population have one the same ( and may not even know they have it)

The good news is,it will not make any difference to my life expectancy and i can do the same strenuous exercise as the next person

my dd2 has a heart murmur. my dh has a serious heart condition.

macwoozy · 19/10/2006 14:10

I also have a heart condition and last year I had an implantable cardiac difibrillator fitted to stop any sustained arrythmias.

Crackle · 19/10/2006 14:13

I have a murmur as does my son. I run nearly every day and have been advised to stay very fit. the heart is, afterall, a muscle that works better when well tuned.

There are so many different sorts of murmur/heart conditions, you have to take advice.

dh also has an ICD as he was having a lot of VT's (think thats what it was)

CharlotteACavatica · 19/10/2006 14:18

I found i had a heart murmur when i was 14 and i still have no idea what they are, im aware its nothing life threatening, but im very surprised at how common they are! I have read alot about your dh misdee, how is he doing? i say a prayer for you all occasionally.

misdee - I am worried about BIL as Dr. seems to think that a virus has affected his heart - Is that what happened to Peter?

misdee · 19/10/2006 20:47

yes, do you msn? there are many virus's that can affect the heart, so dont worry too much. what has happened?

SPACEdoutzombieCADET · 19/10/2006 20:54

my mother has arrythmia, she has had it for years and takes beta blockers, the type of arrythmia which is commonly associated with SAD is called long QT syndrome.

bettythebloodier · 19/10/2006 21:00

I have a heart murmur - had an ECG for a medical for a job a few years ago, and was told that it is 'benign' ie won't cause any problems.
The consultant said (as others have said) that this is fairly common.
Same as notasheep, really - if I felt the need to do strenuous exercise, then I could. That's highly unlikely, though

schneebly · 19/10/2006 21:03
