I have seen lots of posts on here about increased PMS symptoms after having the Copper Coil inserted, especially emotional symptoms and fatigue. I read this with interest as I am suffering the same. To the point that I really don't feel I am myself anymore. Lots of people were asking why this would be as the device is not hormone based so I did a bit of google research and thought you may be interested to know that many of these symptoms are associated with raised copper levels. There is lots hippy stuff about this and what you should do but I found some hard and fast evidence to suggest that there is a correlation between the Copper IUD and raised copper levels. However it does not say that copper gets absorbed or that it has ill effect it is just saying that it is there. But given that raised copper give the symptoms I am suffering and they all started when I had the coil inserted I am going with the assumption that this is what is causing it.
So easiest solution is to have it removed. However it was my last chance attempt at contraception as I do not get on with the hormone based treatments and don't enjoy condoms. So I have looked into what I can do about it.
First thing I am going to do is see my GP to chat about it and take in the evidence that I have found and ask for a test to see what my levels of Copper, Iron and Zinc are.
If this shows that I do indeed have raised copper levels then I am going to try and counteract the effects with supplementation of Zinc and Vit B6 (both copper antagonists and shown to have a positive effect on PMS). May be Magnesuim as there is some evidence for this and perhaps some herbal treatment with Dong Qaui and Black Cohosh.
Hope this is of interest and use to any of you who are suffering with this
