Sertraline and codeine..?

Is it safe to take these together? Has anyone tried? Theres conflicting advice on the internet.

I have an ear infection (on amoxycillin) and a ruptured eardrum. And OH the pain!!!! Ive been told 6-8 weeks to recover, ive lost all hearing in that ear atm. The only way im coping with this pain is
The antibiotics
Hot water bottle on ear
Paracetamol max advised dose every 4hrs.
Ibuprofen max advised dose every 4hrs.
60mg codeine every 6 hrs.

Sertraline is 100mg once daily. Ive stopped taking it cos im worried about the combo of medication im taking but my mood is going abit ð???ð??? now...

dont stop taking the sertraline ffs! google ddrug interactions. i think the ibuprofen is more of an issue than the codeine.

here seems that the codeine wont be as effective but not a problem. ibrupofen on the other hand isnt reccomended

Oh christ.. Now im confused... The pharmacist said the ibuprofen and paracetamol is fine :/ think i might go back to the dr n reel off a list of what im taking n see what he says.... Its been a week now and my ears still bleeding as it was. Hurts so bad x

I take lots of painkillers with sertraline including:
Co codamol
Naproxen
Ibuprofen
Paracetamol

Also take:
IBS meds
Diazepam
Doxylamine
Triptans

Unless you've been informed by your GP or pharmacist (usually better than GP) don't worry
And certainly don't google

tbh i think short term use of ibuprofen is fine. i take it occasionally and im on a similar medication to you. What other meds do you take?

As well as the sertraline- 500mg amoxicillin (4hourly).
2x200mg ibuprofen (4hourly), 2x500mg paracetamol (4hourly) and 2x30mg codeine (6hourly) with warm compress and still feels like the left side of my face is throbbing wiv the pain. Yet im worried about the chance of being too spaced out im a single mum of 4 so i need to still be kindof 'with it' iyswim. Gawd i just want it to be better

My dd has just started taking Sertraline and was told not to stop taking it without speaking to GP first!

I am currently taking all of those and more (post-surgery) so yes they are fine together

It's fine. Shot term Ibuprofen and sertraline will be OK. Longer term not ideal.

I take sertraline and codeine daily as I have a chronic back condition. No side effects noted.

However I am a bit worried about the amount of paracetomol and ibuprofen you are taking. Paracetomol should be 4-6 hourly, and ibuprofen 6-8 hourly. Codeine 6 hourly. Check the packets to make sure you are not exceeding the daily dose. If you are in a lot of pain I suggest you go back to GP. When did you start antibiotics? You should see some improvement after 48 hours. Amoxicillin is quite mild compared to some antibiotics, sounds like you need something stronger. Get an urgent appointment with your GP in the morning.

I've been taking 100mg sertreline for nearly 5 years now and recently iv been taking 500mg of co-codamol 3 tablets over the past 2 days, any side effects if alcohol consumed later in the evening?

I know this thread is a bit old, but I thought I'd add my tuppence worth.

Sertraline (Zoloft) does interact with codeine in that it reduces the effectiveness of it because it blocks the conversion of codeine into morphine, so higher doses of codeine may be required for the same level of pain relief.

I personally have experienced a bad interaction with Sertraline and ibuprofen. I found that the ibuprofen stopped the Sertraline from working. Obviously this can have disastrous consequences, and if there's one thing you don't want to mess around with it's stopping antidepressants suddenly. SSRIs need to be tapered out slowly or you will have a very miserable time. So although I'm not medically trained I'd definitely recommend against taking ibuprofen if you are on an SSRI. There are other painkillers, paracetamol of course, though the lethal dose isn't much higher than the normal max dose of 1g, and it's a horrid slow way to go with no way of stopping it, so stick to the recommended dose for that. Aspirin is nowadays not considered a painkiller and, like Sertraline, is rough on the stomach, so that's out. It thins the blood and that's how it can help stop some types of pain. There always codeine though, but mind it if it's combined with paracetamol.

TLDR : Sertraline and codeine and paracetamol are fine, Sertraline and ibuprofen or aspirin are not ok.

Further to the above, although I'm sure I saw an article suggesting aspirin wasn't a painkiller, rather relying on its other effects and placebo to reduce pain, I can't find anything now to suggest that. However, it is very hard on the stomach. It seems different painkillers may be effective for different things, so it may be worth doing some research to find which is considered effective for any particular application. Caffeine can also be useful to make painkillers more effective.
